Any Parents of Asperger's Kids? Or Help w/School Districts
We will be relocating to the Phoenix area next summer and not sure where in the valley we will be living (depends on jobs, etc..too early to tell). We have three boys, one who is seven and has Asperger's. We were curious as to others experiences in public/private schools and any suggestions as to where to go and where to avoid!
I looked back for other posts, but didn't see anything.
Any help would be appreciated as this is very important to us!
Thanks

You might want to start with Autism/Asperger's parent support group(s) - the REAL experts in the Phoenix area.
The parents already there and in the public education system may very well be your very BEST resource (and sanity savers & new friends). . .
I'm in Tucson, so not much more help that this . . . maybe a google search for the parent support groups in phoenix area? (fingers crossed for you)
My prayers for smooth transition and welcome to your new Arizona home.

If you notice, Gateway has not even bothered to update its academic calendar to the present year. It is advertising constantly for teachers and other staff positions.
It is said that this school has a far greater number of *former* students, teachers and staff (and board members) than it does present students, teachers and staff (and board members) --and this is but the school's third year of operation.
Checking with local autism/asperger's support groups in the Phoenix area is the best suggestion.

Gateway Academy
Hi Solita,
I've noticed a few things about Gateway's rotating students and staff and one of them is the Calender.
I hear that the Howard S. Gray Education Program is a good one with more stability.
Do you have any knowledge of alternative educational programs to Gateway Academy for kids with Asperger's, HFA or PDD-NOS?
Thanks,
Santee

The Howard Gray School in Scottsdale would be another choice and is indeed more established. However, it is more for a wider range of situations in addition to AS and HFA. Some people have noted they do not care for the more clinical ambiance, and its academics are said to not be as rigorous.
Another viable alternative is possibly the New Way Academy also in Scottsdale. If you do a search you can find its website. Although it is not listed for autism specifically, some families have been most pleased with this option for their HFA/AS children.
Other than that, there is presently nothing (or very little else) for this population of students in the Phoenix area, unless one just happens to luck into a good situation (and many people do).
I was recently told by a clinical psychologist that there is a new school "in the works" for AS/HFA students to fill this niche, and that more information would be available in the next several months. We shall see. We have heard this one before!
We are homeschoolers (and also educators) and this has been the very best option by far for us, after having been subjected to a list of educational situations.
Best of luck!
Sol
