Anywho, I'm from Chicago but I always say "soda" just to annoy people here.

Pop is the "water" in all village communities;

but no one uses the word 'soda' our water is POP i.e. coke, pepsi etc.

24 dollars per case in the villages - in some stores - it is $1.50 per can !!

Village water is yuk.

Arizona is solidly a "soda" state as part of the western dialect region, except for those weirdies in Santa Cruz, Gila, and Greenlee counties who side with their neighbors in the southern dialect region and say "Coke" as a generic term for soft drink.

You find odder terms in other parts of the country, like "dope" in the Carolinas and "tonic" in Boston (both fading away in use), or "soda pop" in the deep south.

That's a Midwestern thing. If someone says that in Arizona, it's almost certainly because they're from that region. You'll hear it more in the Phoenix area because that area has more Midwest transplants.
