Yes pop to differentiate it from soda which originally contained opiates. This is an interesting read about soda and pop

I grew up in OK and TX in a family with Southern roots. We didn't say "soda." We said "coke" generically unless we were specifying Dr. Pepper. I think it's possible we sometimes said "pop," but I mainly remember "coke."

To us, a "soda" meant something with ice cream in it. Usually, a coke or 7 Up poured over a few scoops of ice cream in a tall glass. And a rare treat.

I remember when I was about ten years old, we were visiting some relatives or old friends of my stepmom's in the Midwest (either Missouri or Michigan). Our hostess asked us if we wanted "a soda," and my stepmom practically gushed how nice that would be. I was sure she expected an ice cream soda, but we were served soft drinks. I was a voracious reader of books and magazines, and I'd understood what our hostess meant although we didn't use "soda" that way ourselves. It was one of my first life lessons in regional language differences.

I grew up in "pop" country, moved to "coke" land, and settled down in "soda" world. I can never remember what it's called where I am at any given time Sometimes I say "sodapop" and mostly I just call it by brand name (coke, pepsi, dr. pepper).

Mainly called soda in this region. When I lived in Minnesota, everybody said "pop". It is soda on the east coast too. Just a regionalism.
