Lightbulb Moving to Snowflake

We live in WV and go to a small branch only about 25 active members.

If you're LDS (Mormon) and really want a large showing of that religion in your life, Snowflake is a great place for that. I am LDS and I have lived in Snowflake for nearly 8 years.

Snowflake has a stake and so does Taylor (our neighbors 3 miles to the south). There are 10 wards and a singles branch in Snowflake and there are 11 wards in Taylor. (one is spanish speaking). It is said that about 50% of the population is LDS, I'm not sure if it's that high, but it's close. After WV it will be culture shock! Do you have children? Snowflake/Taylor are full of kids (the demographics on the whole White Mountain Area say that 50% of the population is under 18 years old)

Snowflake has an IGA grocery store, Circle K, lots of Mom and Pop, a few fast food. There is also a health food store/restaurant/grocery. Taylor has a major grocery chain in AZ, but not sure if they will survive the Wal-Mart in vasion right across the highway. There are a couple of dollar store also.

We get DSL, cable TV, good cell coverage in town, city water, garbage pick up, the usual "in town" amenities.

There are a lot of people here that live outside of town (east) that are here to be "off the grid". They live off of solar power, hauling water, etc.

Show Low is the place for shopping (only15 miles away) it has a super Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Sears, JC Penney's, KMart, lots of Mom and Pop and all the food chains that you can think of (well almost). It is growing FAST! The housing is about $20 -30,000 more there than Snowflake/Taylor.

There aren't a lot of homes for rent, but you may be able to find one. In fact, my husband and I are planning a move to Texas soon. (Business related) We are planning on renting our house. 4 bd/3 ba.

Hope this helps. I'll be happy to answer any questions.

I'll try and post some pictures of the town later.

Unhappy Texas

To those posters who are moving to Texas......my husband and I.bought a home in
west Fort Worth almost a year ago. I am an Arizona native, raised in Phoenix but born in Eagar. We sold our home in Mesa just before the real estate bubble popped. We made out very well and were full time RVers for 15 months. Texas homes are definetly less expensive but hold on to your hat....
the real estate property tax is about 3 times higher than Maricopa county.
If you are 65 years old it does drop about a third after you fill out the tax form that your local county tax office will send you.
Texas is a neat state in a lot of ways.....no test given when you apply for your driving license. But the summers are a killer......worse than Phoenix in may ways. You had better like the humidity if you live anywhere from the center of the state to the gulf. The ground shifts in north Texas....don't know about the other areas of the state. Hence, big companies who do foundation repair on homes do a huge business here. You won't see block walls around back yards because of that problem.
I miss the mountain ranges and dry air of Arizona......after we have owned our home here for 2 years we hope to sell and possibly head back to AZ.
There is a temple in Dallas, (I think 3 in the state) but it is a rat race with the traffic to get there. Dallas is about 50 miles from Fort Worth.
If you are LDS, it will be a mild culture shock for you in this part of the country.....the ward boundaries are huge.
Texas is so large that there is not much diversity in the countryside.....just trees, trees, and more trees for half of the state. I really miss the variety of Arizona and the other Rocky Mountain states.
Good luck to you in your move............
Not happy in Texas

You shouldn't have much problems living there being non-LDS. As the rest of the thread stated, if or when it snows in Snowflake, it melts pretty quick and doesn't accumulate like it would closer to the rim like in Show Low or Pinetop/Lakeside.
