The Sierra Vista Fire Department confirms that debris have scattered around town, with chunks of the balloon landing in neighboring yards and streets. No injuries have been reported.
It amazes me that the federal government will risk killing and injuring our citizens just to fight their war on drugs.

Just goes to show that you can't please everyone. People want illegal alien and or drug smuggling stopped or diminished. Yet when a government program has a mishap such as this one, some people will always complain about something. Are people fickle, or what? I am not a fan of big government and I believe that drug use such as medicinal marijuana should be allowed. I want the government off my back and out of my pocket. So there!

Wow, dramatic much? If you had a car crash, would you appreciate somebody complaining that you'd risk killing and injuring our civilians by driving to work? It's a balloon for heaven's sake. Get a grip!

I say make marijuana legal, let the government tax the crap out of it (like cigarettes), and enforce laws similar to DWI laws regarding it. Employers can enforce their own rules. Just like you cant go into work drunk without getting fired, the same thing will happen if you are wasted at work. Benefits include: Increased tax revenue, decreased border security required, elimination of the 30 year old drug war, and decreased tensions with Mexico. It's similar to prohibition in the 20s. It just doesn't work.

But that's off topic. You'd think they would have reeled in the balloon when it got windy.

I don't think I'll be spending much time worrying about Aerostat blimps crashing on top of my car anytime soon. I'd be more worried if my kids were playing on untethered jumping castles...

Or meth. Almost all of the meth in Arizona comes from Mexico. There are few if any meth labs here any more since the DEA put stringent controls on the raw ingredients.

I lived just a few miles from the balloon base for about 6 years until 3 years ago.
More so than the balloon itself, I have to wonder what happened to the cable it was attached to? It was a very large diameter cable.
Sierra Vista has sure changed a lot since '66-67 when I was first stationed there.
No balloon or much of anything else back then and one bus out and in daily for the GIs that were stationed there.
