Can anyone tell me anything about the Safford/Thathcher area.

It kind of stands alone some distance away from any major city. We lived there for some 5 years until my wife's job transferred to Sierra Vista.
I don't know if you need employment but there is not much employment in the area that pays anything. The Prisons, the Forest Service and the mines in the Morenci area seemed to be the have better wages than most.
Limited shopping available and Tucson is some distance away at around 130 miles.
It can get pretty warm with temps over 100° in the summer and when the winds blow it can get dusty with the farming that is in the area.

I also saw quite a bit of drug activity for a small town while we lived there, meth mainly or so it seemed. But that may have changed since we lived there.
