Hello, I am new to this forum. I have had some difficulty navigating this site - forgive me if this is a repeat.

I am looking for information on Kingman neighborhoods. My family and I are looking to relocate there. We are from Montrose, Colorado - having cruised on a sailboat in Mexico for three years now. We have a son in high school (Jr.) and daughter in 6th grade. My father-in-law lives in Lake Havasu City and we want to be close, but feel that Havasu is a bit too pricey overall.

I have read through the Kingman forums and understand that "Birdland" is a no-no. I am not sure where that is. Can someone guide me as to the names of the neighborhoods and their reputations regarding safety. Yes - yes... I know, all towns have their level of crime. I am not asking which neighborhood has NEVER had crime - I am asking what neighborhoods have a decent reputation and which neighborhoods are scary and to avoid. I am looking for compass directions: north, south, east or west of downtown.

We will be visiting the area the first part of November. We had a yummy meal at a Thai food restaurant this month when passing through. Kingman struck us as a town with many possibilities.

Thanks in advance for you time and commentary.

I like any of the neighborhoods east-north-east of downtown, between Hualapai Mountain Road, and Louise Ave, including Southern Ave, from where they cross Eastern Ave and then to the east. In general these are newer neighborhoods. Kingman is very transparent. If the neighborhood looks bad, it probably is and vice versa. The golf course area looks good. Camelback where Rambrush lives is north of downtown along Stockton Hill Rd is nice, and Riata Valley in the same general area is nice too. Birdland is a bunch of old rundown miner shacks for the most part. Again if it looks bad, it probably is. Butler, a huge area to the north is generally an older area as well. Some of it is maintained nicely, but some areas are rundown and problematic. You definitely need to take a good look at the specific street you're considering there. The Fairgrounds area has mostly older homes, but most of the areas show pride of ownership which is always a good sign. All that being said, I don't think any area is unsafe. You almost never hear of rapes or murders in Kingman that aren't related to domestic situations or drugs. Your biggest worry is petty crimes like car break-ins, usually perpetrated by druggies or kids.

Don't forget that Arizona has the worst funded schools in the country. The number of high school graduates in Kingman that go on to college is 13%. I personally believe that good parenting is more important than the quality of schools in how far your kids will go in life. But you need to have your eyes open as to what you're getting into.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the info on the neighborhoods.

I hear you on the schools. I guess you get out of it what you put into it - no matter where you are.

Looking forward to being part of the community. Thanks again.

I just interviewed @ KRMC last month & spent 3-days doing nothing but driving around and here are my 2-cents:

The town itself is a small town feel for the most part seems to be a great small town community, upon interviewing at the hospital I was amazed at how advanced they are for such a small area, I work at a hospital quite a bit bigger than KRMC & they are right where we are as far as technology & competentcy the wellness center there is outstanding and top notch.

I however live in Terre Haute, Indiana & Kingman reminds me of my home town which is just not what I'm looking for obviously since I'm looking for a change. I'm looking into Arizona planned communities where you are still small town feel but have the water parks, pools, walking/biking trails etc... Right in your own neighborhood this is a big attraction for my wife, 7yo son, 4yo daughter & myself.

Sooo yatta yatta on & on before this gets too long my take was Kingman is a great small town away from all the hub bub of the big town but is also a drive from the big town, my mom & dad are moving to Glendale area & Kingman was about a four hour drive from them so it just isn't going to work for us not that I had any issues with the town, just the distance from what we are currently looking for it just was a deal breaker for us but you can raise a family here just fine, but like was mentioned here earlier the schools are a little under par and the high school is crowded, but they have a new high school built I believe & the town itself is on the way to major progress over the next 10 years all in all a good move for the retiree or family wanting to get away from it all.

I wish I could have taken the job offer because the people here were great & had a good "Ora" about them, everywhere I went was greeted with smiles and welcoming personalities. I'm also sure there are more things I missed to do etc. As 3-days were only enough to feel out the area not get in depth about any and all activities etc. But did give me enough time to say I did not EVER feel like I was in a bad place.

Hope this helps at all for what it's worth.

Sorry things did not work out for you.
As you are aware most of us never go south for supplies etc. Its much faster and easier to make the run North to Henderson.

But Friday night we discovered there is major construction between Boulder and the Bridge thus it took us a hour and half to travel from the center of the bridge (Arizona Side) to Boulder we were stuck and no where to go around so be aware to not go that direction any time soon and go through Searchlight.

Yeah I figured that, just not what I wanted, but I did think it was a great area though, totally don't want it to come off rude I'm in no way bashing the town, it just reminds me of my current town, which there is nothing wrong with, I'm just looking for a change so moving 1600 miles away from my current area to have the same lifestyle just wasn't what I'm after, if I didn't have the kiddos with me it would be a perfect place, I just need to be closer to more activities for them! LoL!

We had no problem at all keeping the kids busy with gymnastics, karate, piano, violin lessons, as well as school sports like gym hockey and volleyball. We also took family hikes up in the Hualapai Mountain Park and rented boats occasionally on Lake Mohave and Lake Mead. We recently moved to a big metropolitan area with every amenity possible and the kids do essentially the same things here as they did in Kingman. Actually we cut down on activities somewhat due to their homework load. I'm sure your kids would be happy in either area. Although it sounds like you want to be closer to your parents which is an important consideration.

Default Vegas

Hi Rambrush,

Thanks for the info. When is the construction going on and when should it be safe to go from Kingman? We're supposed to go up for National Finals Rodeo the first part if Dec.

Heck just go
Use the over the hill to Bullhead CalNevAri Searchlight route. As this route is now four lanes it is a pretty quick bypass. I was told that there is a talk radio station on am that is heard in Kingman that comes from Vegas and they have had the road alerts. Still not for sure what channel its on but it covers the road work in Boulder thats taking place.

Default Hoover Dam Bridge

Thanks Rambrush, I did try that number of the am station on the way to Hoover a few months ago but it wasn't good for cell phones as I remember. I'll check it out before we go. We did do the route through BHC & Laughlin once when they had a 2 hour wait going thorugh Kingman. It was worth it, stopped in Searchlight casino and won a few bucks a case of bottled water, lol!
