Interesting... I've seen them around Tucson (Green Valley) and they are usually darker in color, kinda like the ones on the top of your link. I've never seen a yellow one like that. Sounds like we nailed it though.

Edit: Did another search. Apparently it's called a Sacken's Velvet Ant. Never seen one of them before.

GOT him! But in this photo it is not fluffy because I had to flush the grass with water to get him to come out from hiding. So she is all wet.

What you describe does not sound like a bee. Pinchers in front? Maybe some kind of scorpion variant.

I REALLY appreciate that link. The photo at the bottom of the page suddenly made me realize something I'd seen near Karchner Caverns was a white version of the velvent ant. I'd never been able to determine what it was. It was moving very quickly and erratically and looked rather like a large snowflake scurry across the ground. Aside from the fact that the color was white instead of yellow it looked almost exactly like the photo I mention at the bottom of the page you linked to.

Thank for the info.

Ken

We have Velvet Ants in the Verde. I've seen them white and more commonly in bright scarlet red. And they DO sting. Feels about like a triple red ant bite.
