The prison checks to see if the visitor is a former inmate there or at any other prison in the state. Ex-Inmates are not allowed to come visit other inmates for one year. Some states will not let anyone on parole visit an inmate. The visits are not so much for the CRIMINALS as someone stated, but are for the family members of the inmate. Most of the people are young and the parents want to see them, or they may have children who want to see them. Moderator cut: off topic

The one glaring thing that everyone has missed so far is many of these visitors are very probably on some sort of public assistance. For those that receive food stamps and/or cash that $25 would without a doubt come from their public assistance monies so in effect YOU are paying. It's called a "back door tax" and happens more frequently than anyone will admit.
Hmmm, what a novel idea, give the person money then charge 'em "fees" and steal it back.
Why didn't I think of that?

Wow, $25 whole dollars. Yeah, they might have to go without their smokes for a day!

Then the CRIMINALS have another reason to think about what result THEIR actions affect others.

The fee is a great idea.

A 25 dollar fee could pay for up grading and renovations in the prison. In Canada there are 14835 prisoners, and if each prisoner will get 15 visitors, that would be 5 563 125 dollars toward the renovation, and the building of space for
2500 more prisoners that they dont even need, as they have now extra room in the prisons, there are room for
15033 prisoners. But the government will pay for all the extra spaces and all the renovations.

Actually, Moses . . .

The government doesn't pay for squat, the taxpayers do.

That's the problem. This $25 fee does not go straight towards public run prisons. It goes into a special fund that only the legislature can dole out. When they do, I bet most of the money will go to the private prisons for renovations. Something that we already pay them for.

(private prisons are eligible for these funds.)

Just another addition to a bill, payed for and written by our corporate masters.

I know that sec. 15 and 16 also require money from inmate store profits (at least $500,000 per) and another fund that should have nothing to do with upkeep. Some of the other sections also seem, to me, as a way for private prisons to get more of our tax dollars in roundabout ways.

Maybe I'm a bit to cynical. I guess we will have to wait and see where the money goes next year.
