Hello.
We are locating to Show Low here within the next year. We have 3 teenagers and everything I am reading on this, says the schools are bad. What is wrong with them? Does anyone know how many credits you have to have to graduate? Any suggestions on a new business that you would like to see come in? We are hoping to start our own when we move over and would like some input as to what you would like to see come in. We are also looking for a home to buy that possibly owner will carry. Even caretakers on a ranch would be great. We have 3 horses as well as dogs and cats. Thanks for any response to helpus out. |

90% of us speak English up in this area. There are some spanish speakers, and a few A.S.L. (American Sign Language) signers here. There is also a school here the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind. in Lakeside.

I moved to Show Low from Phoenix 14 years ago. It has changed alot since i have been here, and i would not say for the better! Many people move here for the rural lifestyle, and for the many outdoor activities, but the fish are quickly disappearing from the mountain streams, many gated communities are popping up, old growth trees are quickly disappearing to make room for more development. This area used to be a tourist destination, but it is quickly being bought up by second home owners who build McMansions and rarely live in their homes, thus driving up tax rates for the people who do live here year round. Good jobs are scarce, unless you start your own business and work non-stop 24/7. The summertime is a beautiful season, with temps in the average 80's, but this also brings about hoards of summertime visitors from Phoenix and Tucson seeking relief from the desert heat; thus crowded streets, long lines at restaurants and the forever complaining attitude of these folks who just can't seem to be patient. I have heard many horror stories about the local medical services, and many many docters in this town have numerous complaints against them for malpractice. Sure, there may be good medical professionals around, but they rarely take new patients. And did i mention the huge Meth problem here? People of all ages and backgrounds seem to have a problem with it, and the local judges turn a blind eye to the problem. There is still the mentality here that if you are not a Morman you are a lower class citizen, and it is common to see Mexican families stopped by the police and asked for verification of their legal status. Just because one's skin color is darker than the majority here, it IS reason for the police to question you. Rentals are scarce, and the average price for a 2-3 bedroom home starts at $1,000 a month, and this is usually a manufactured home. I could go on and on with the things i dislike about this town, but it is my first post on this forum, so i don't want to make too many enemies right away!

I agree with much of what gitana says except for the last 1/3.
Trees are coming down, lots of gated communities going up with taxes. The hospital has just been added onto & very nice. Has 2 medi-vac helicopters to Phoenix. Lowes is in & I hear a Kohl's is coming but not sure. Show Low is not a place for teenagers to move to. Nothing to do, lots of drugs, and every week a list of arrests in the paper. Under 18, mostly for shoplifting or drugs. In the winter the town is literally dead & empty. Good jobs are very scarce. In the spring the town swells with summer dwellers from Phoenix. Housing prices rise & rentals go up. It seems the town is owned by Mormon families, English is definitely the preferred language. I see a few Indians & Hispanic but not many. Unless you like to hunt or hike there are no attractions & Phoenix is a 3 hour drive. |

Here is the local paper online.
WMICentral - News - Top Stories Unless you're starting your own business expext low wages with lots of hours. If you are going to start a business the work force is slim pickings here. One of the reasons Pat's Place closed after 30 years. Knew the people that started Licanos. They sold it & started Meteao's. A smaller opperation then sold it because it got hard to find good dependable help. The economy is slow/sluggish even more so than other areas in the US. There are very few jobs with benefits here outside of the hospital, government or utility providers. Right now big money is buying up the land & building house's for the people moving in from other areas. 85% of the people that work here can't afford them. As the price of gas goes up so will the normal things you need to live which are high all ready. Walmart did alot to bring prices down when they got here but we lost alot of good business's. Show Low still is the hub of the White Mountains but Snowflake is building up fast too. Walmart is putting a store there this year & it's only 20 miles away. Speaking of mileage you're a 200 miles away from any big city(Phoenix, Tucson & Gallup), Flagstaff is 150 miles away but I don't count that as a big city. Now for some of the good things here. Fishing is good but you really need a boat if you can not walk very good. All of the lakes have been locked up so you can not get near them with a car or truck. Weekdays are good because it's mostly retirees, weekends can get crowded as the temp goes up in Phoenix. When in the forrest remember this is no petting zoo here, these are wild critters. When you do see them it is awsome. There are some great sights up here & some cool little get-aways if you listen to the oldtimers(people that have lived here awhile) here. The weather has been very dry the last 6 years till last winter but we have yet to have any spring rain. The wind seems to have been blowing for the last month every day but it's been sunny & cool(70 degrees average). For the most part Show Low get all 4 seasons is great for most outside activities. I have lived here 22 years & preferred it as the small town it ws but things never stay the same |

I have been here since Dec 2007. I retired and am bored after moving from So Cal.
I can see why teens get in so much trouble there is absolutely nothing for them to do. I have spoken to alot of them and they plan to move when finishing H.S. It was like a ghost town in winter but I did like the snow & relief from the heat of summer. Rumors of a Kohl's, Target, Sam's Club & Applebees were rampant but have died out. No shopping. It is a beautiful area for retirement. |
