No we have big cockroaches and big black stink bug's. I lived in chicago for about 3.5 years and yes the stink bugs are around the water, but they are much bigger here. We have the large TARANTULA WASP and if you see it go ther other way if you can't hope you have fruit with you, they will go after the fruit. The fruit will paralize it and you will be able to leave it or kill it. The Black widows i see daily. Scorpions i see maybe once a month.
With the heat trust me you will see it does get to at least 125 every year and last year it was 133. I work in it every day out doors and at my work we have 3 monitors to tell us the temp. |

I've only seen those water bugs once in someones apartment and I nearly sh*t myself!
Are you in construction? I assume that due to your job outdoors, you tend to confront these repulsive insects more often than most people...do you see any of them INSIDE your home and how often? Please allow me to ask, are there any good things that you like about the area? Why are you sticking around if you don't like it? How long have you lived there? How is crime? Oh and what months do the tarantula wasps come around? There must be taratula spiders too then. Hope that's not too many questions but your responses to them will be a great help to me. Thanks again. --------------------- Quote:

Hello all! some friends of mine sold their home in "paradise" california and moved to the area 9 years ago. They are very happy. They have a pool and that is how they spend their off time. He loves to BBQ so they have an outdoor kitchen. He works as a marine surveyor, she worksat harrahs as an admin assit. She is finally making $40,000 a year. He is doing well with his business, they needed a marine survey business in the tri state area so he started one. He is making money!!! Their house is really nice up on the hill.
I ahve visited several times. As much as I love visiting, I would not want to live there. There just is not enough to do there. The things that I like: art, culture, yoga etc... are just not there. If you are into a pool and or have a boat then maybe. As for jobs, well since the area is experiencing tremdous growth, if you have a skill and a entreprenual spirit, starting a business there can be a great thing since they need everything. Are you into yoga? great start a yoga studio. Get the idea? I briefly considered moving there and am very glad I did not. As far as crime, There is an area the 'riviera" down south of town that is horrible. There will always be bad areas of any town. I just dont like the casino and drinking environment. It is extremely hot, so hot you cant really enjoy being outside much of the day. I only visit in June or Sept, cause the rest of the summer is too hot. When I visit I am in thier pool almost the entire time, get a pool. Good luck. |

riviera is very bad and many other areas around here. Lots of drugs and the high school has a high drop out rate with alot (not just a few) of kids getting pregnate. It is not uncommon to see a street of home discribed as trailier, trailier, house, buissness, trailer, trailer. Just to let you know the average price for a 1970's single wide trailier in one of the worst areas in bullhead (riviera), on a lot barely able to fit the trailer is approx. 80,000.
I moved here because of family medical problems (to help) 4 years ago. Thouse problems are over , but now i'm stuck in a low income deal (the areas deal). I will be leaving around may of 07. As for seeing these bugs and stuff, Im a bike officer for a casino in laughlin. They are all over this area, yes the wasp are here and i'm told the tarantula's to. What it is the tarantula's migrate following the river. I have never seen the tarantula's, but the wasp follows them during there migration south. Water bug's live by water and sence the town is built around water because it's one of the hottest areas in the contry you'll see them every were. As for in the house keep a clean house and they won't be inside. now for some thing good about bullhead. I use to think it was pretty only because i deluted myself in thinking i was close to mountains. The mountains do look nice when you can be outside and not die from heat. The weather during the spring and fall is very nice when the winds are not blowing 55 mph +. I can tolerate many different climates, But it is hot beyond any dry heat talk. I work out side every day, all day, during the hottest part of the day so I know. The river has some nice views to. If you go to havasu maybe you can catch the girls gone wild movie shoots. I did have the pleasure of seeing the christmas tree pass water falls working last year. The water falls go maybe once every 50 years. |

Thanks for all the info guys, you've given me much to think about. Can't imagine working outside in that heat, no wonder you've soured on the area.
My Realtor did warn me about the Riviera areas of which there are apparently several with Riviera in the name. I did notice that these properties with a mobile home on it are not especially cheap which I would imagine is a good indication of...well, an indication of something...maybe growth potential. I found one property in Happy Valley that looks nice. Any insight on Happy Valley? I also like that there are sewers being installed. I did notice on city-data that the crime rate in BHC is higher than the national average, I assume the majority of crime is in the Riviera area. I think I could deal with just about all the bugs except the water bugs...they make me sick! I was in Louisiana years ago and what I was later told was a "water bug" crawled up my leg in bed. I whacked it away with a book and instead of going the other way, it crawled toward me again...aggressive somnabitch! Point is, I couldn't even tell that story without feeling like I was going to pass out for almost 3 years. I'm a 6' tall adult male and I'm paralyzed with fear of large bugs! I have a pet raccoon which gets temperamental sometimes and has attacked me and yet I'm afraid of bugs...go figure. One other thing, I've heard that there are no mosquitoes and flies are rare, is that true? Also, does BHC get any property tax benefit from the casinos? Thanks again. ------------------------------------ Quote:

there is mosquitoes, but very very few. There is some flies out here just not all year long and very managable.
Crime is all over BHC, most in select areas of BHC. There is no tax benefit from working at a casino. You may get a deal on an apartment move in cost and a deal from a health club depending on what casino you work at. I am sour on the area, but not only because of the heat. I can deal with the heat if this was the only thing wrong. There is many reasons why. You'll find out if you move here. you'll like it for a while, then you won't. This is why the jobs pay so low and the town is like it is, no one stay's unless your trapped. Most will say the same to you, that live here. Arizona is great place with great views, just not this area. Most areas in arizona either has high housing cost or no pay for jobs, this area has both. Not all, but most people here has no family values and don't celabrate holidays. The area is a 24 hr town so there is alot of jobs working nights and holiday and weekends. People were nicer in down town chicago then here. |

That's why I ask so many questions, I'd hate to find out what's wrong after I move there. Therefore, ALL your input is very much appreciated.
Being amongst people with family values would be important to me too, that's too bad that the area is like that, sounds like what's wrong with much of the country...and their kids. My question about the casino tax benefits were meant to ask if the BHC residents get property tax breaks due to the revenue of the casinos? Do you know anything about the Happy Valley area? Isn't BHC supposedly starting to boom? I like Chicago for the people too. Been here my entire life though and the weather extremes suck. 110 degree heat index today with 90% humidity...I stayed in all day. One in the morning and it's still miserable. Winter is like a frozen Hell! -------------------------- ------------------------ Quote:

BHC was in a housing boom, but then there were no jobs and what you would find paid very little. Now we have the forclosure boom. All the companies wanting to come in to BHC decided to not build because of the forclosure boom. They own the land with no buildings. Some day it will pick up, but for now there is nothing.Bhc finally figured out they messed up setting up this town, but there is no turning back. There was BHC, then they messed up so they tried again. Now there is old BHC and new BHC and still did it wrong.
No idea about Happy valley. I do know there is alot of them in NV. and AZ.. As for your weather it does suck, but I would deal with it. You have alot more day out you can enjoy. You want more extreem weather like yours go to north west indiana. There is more humidity in those corn fields, trust me I know. The winters are hell in chicago, but in Laporte, indiana were I was, you lived in a bowl. All the lake effect snow dropped there I was snowed in my house with snow mobiles on my roof 2 different years. I moved out here for family, but i needed to get away from the super deep snow. Part of why I liked it here at first. I moved here in feb., out running another snow storm and 20 below wind chills in indiana. When I arrived in BHC it was what I thought a heat wave for feb. of 55 degrees. I was wearing shorts and short sleeve shirts as everyone else was in long pants, long sleeve shirts and looking at me wierd. Got to remember I was in 75 degree warmer weather, and back in dec. and jan. I was seeing 40-50 below wind chill weather. Now 4 years later 30-40 degree winters here are very cold to me. You will get use to the heat and the cold will get real cold to where you will shake in it. You will want the 70-80 degree weather, but it will last for about 3 weeks then it will get to 100 degrees. |

You're not moving back to the midwest when you leave BHC, are you? Now that you've adjusted to the "cold" of BHC, you'd be miserable with a winter back in Indiana.
How would you say they messed up the town? Laid out wrong? The 100 plus degree weather tends to be in June, July and August, right? Then it drops down for the rest of the year? I'm telling you, 110 with 20% humidity sounds much better than 80 and 90% humidity...I think you have forgotten just how bad it really is out this way. Though I would imagine the working outdoors part is what really gets to you. I was just thinking recently, the purpose of sweat is to evaporate and cool your body off...sweat doesn't evaporate here, it just sticks and makes you feel miserable. I would imagine that sweat serves it's purpose in BHC. Thanks --------------------------------------- Quote:

you will start to see some 100 degree days in april - the end of sept. some years. Humidity is between 8 percent - 35 percent. 130 degrees at 30 perxcent humidity sucks man don't kid yourself. I like the 90 degrees with 90 percent humidity better. The sweat does stick to ya and you do get very sick of it, but your able to go out and have a picnic or play with the dog or just enjoy life. If the sweat evaporates befor it comes out of your pours you get salt residue. YOU WILL NOT COOL OFF. sweat cools you not the lack of.
Yes BHC is laid out all wrong. I'll be moving back where i'm originally from shenandoah mountains of VIRGINIA |
