My sister-in-law who lives in Sierra Vista recently dumped cable to save money. After purchasing a fancy indoor antenna, she says that NBC (KVOA) is the only station (English language, that is) available there. Is that true?

Indoor antennas are very limited to stations received. You only get what signals that enter the window and is bouncing around inside. She should get an outdoor antenna mounted on a tall mast 6+ ft and an antenna with at least an 80 mile range or even better 100+ mile range. You'll get much better reception and good HDTV that's directed toward her. My outdoor antenna in the Phoenix area gets over 30 TV stations for free.

True. Can't she just afford the 12 channel package from Cox?

And it all depends on where you live in the area. The Huachuca Mountains block many signals from Tuscon.
For a few years we lived just some 8 miles south on HWY 92 from the city center. It was a nice location at the base of the mountains but line of sight reception from Tucson was impossible.

Times are tight. Instead of that, they opted for the $8/mo. streaming Netflix for TV shows and movies. They don't really keep up with the news or talk shows, soaps, etc., so I guess that works for them.

If she's picking up KVOA inside the house then she should be able to pick up several other stations with an outdoor antenna.

During the Monument Fire I depended on emergency messages from all three Tucson Channels. KVOA did a good job.

Sierra Vista is 60 miles southeast of Tucson on the border. We can barely pick up a signal from Tucson. I suppose COX is the best idea but even they have outdated cable. I pay a bundle for Direct TV

She's picking up K20FO which is a translator (repeater) station for KVOA and the only TV broadcast signal in Sierra Vista.

She will at least have the local news and weather and some sports programs. In addition to the NBC shows.
