Definitely . . . THE END OF THE ROAD, ibbill.
Unfortunately, Douglas isn't even one of those places that is referred to as a "Nice Place To Visit!"

I'd recommend nearby Sierra Vista instead...
for lots of reasons: way more things to do, less crime (not a border town as Douglas) and you won't get bored as easily. I went to college in Douglas (yes, there's a small community college there) but not much more. They have a handful of generic stores (Target, Walmart, Taco Bell, etc.) but the town really seems to have "regressed" from the time I lived there. (BTW, just went there this past weekend to look up some old friends who no longer live there!)
Housing is probably cheap, but again, there's nothing to do there. I'd really recommend you take a look at Sierra Vista, they have Fort Huachuca there, lots of new buildings going up, colleges, etc. and probably way more to do in every sense of the word. Good luck!

After many years in AZ, just last weekend when I was in Bisbee I felt inclined to drive down and check out Douglas out of curiosity (OK, not only curiosity - duty-free shop ). As far as I'm concerned, it's a quite depressing place. It must've been better at some point, though. They have a main street with pretty nice albeit somewhat run-down old architecture. Even the Mexican town across the border (Agua Prieta) is not fun. Granted, the nature around is pretty. Bisbee is about 21 miles away. Since you're a military individual, you may not be bothered by the border patrol being around you at all times... I wouldn't live there, but my preferences are not mainstream.

Living in Douglas
Hi: Don't know what your interests are as a single individual. If you like to go out on the town forget it. People complain about crime, etc. here. I have lived here for over three years now and have had no problems. One advantage to being on the border is that all the illegal traffic is going through Douglas and not staying in it.
The cost of living here is great, there are a lot of parks, two swimming pools (one inside and one out). There is a raquetball court, therapy pool. Because Agua Prieta is so large a city across the border, Douglas has a lot of amenities a town this size wouldn't have otherwise. Land and homes are still inexpensive here and if you want to live the quiet life, it's great. Douglas is a very clean town and it is constantly being improved on.
I retired here and absolutely love the weather. About the time it gets good and hot in the summer, the monsoon comes and it cools down. I am not sorry I moved here and plan on building out a couple of miles on acreage. Water is abundant so far as wells are concerned. Hope it helps you out.

WHAT!!!!
Take a closer look at your neighbors!!
Darn near almost every house in Douglas has been a stash house for either illegals or dope. Douglas is a smugglers paradise. There is a reason that illegalalien traffic goes THROUGH Douglas. After working nearly all border towns in AZ, Douglas is #1 for smuggling activity. Per capita Naco is worse, but Douglas has the volume by numbers.
Gang activity is astronomical in comparison to ALL other towns in Cochise County. Douglas has an all to well entrenched corrupt local government. Just look at the recent dealing with Mayor Borrain.
Douglas is NOT recommended! Unless you want to get into smuggling.

Are you interested in the Whetstone/Huachuca City area. That's near Sierra Vista, but its out of town and you still have access to shopping and other things in Sierra Vista.

Douglas is a perfect place for you. There are stores and restaurants everything you need. Not all homes are cheap believe me! People there are very friendly. Oh wait, and if you get sick you could just cross the border and go to the doctor, Agua Prieta is full of doctors believe me. I really think Douglas is right for you.
