You have forgotten two very walkable areas - Scottsdale near Camelback has many condos and it's possible to find work in the area. Anywhere near C-Back and Old Town could have possibilities.

Second area is the city of Glendale. I've been downtown Glendale in all seasons and there are always people out strolling in the evenings. There are some places in the area where you could find work.

It all depends on what you are looking for. With an IT job where you work remotely, you'd be fine in either place. There's some public transportation, you could get a bicycle for quick trips. And do what my sister used to do -- when you decided you wanted to go tour AZ or needed to be out late, rent a car for a few days. Join a car rental frequent driver club (Alamo, Thrifty, etc.) and just get one from time to time. It actually works well because you don't have the insurance and car payments to worry about. It's do-able.

You're right about that part of Scottsdale. I live near Old Town and it's very easy to walk there and back.

Sierra Vista has a fantastic bus service, and with that and walking you can get anywhere in town easily. The only thing is the hours, 7-6, limited Saturday runs, and no Sunday runs.

The stretch along Frye Boulevard can be walkable I guess, but it still doesn't have the walkability that places like Bisbee have. Sierra Vista is also very spread out. It reminds me of a suburb of a larger city, except it's a small city of its own and pretty much off by itself.

One walkable town I forgot about is Tombstone. The entire town is pretty much a tourist attraction with its old west theme, but it's pretty difficult to drive around there. You pretty much NEED to get out and walk in order to explore the place.
