Is valley fever a concern if Im just going to visit Phoenix as a tourist for a few weeks?

Lets say Im unlucky and get infected by the dissiminated type of valley fever and need medical treatment, how in earth do I get help?

I live in Europe, where the doctors dont have a clue about the disease. Do I then have to go to Arizona to get treatment? As I have understood, if you are infected by the dissiminated type then you have to get treatment for at least a month and it could be far more than that..I really can't afford to go back and forth to Arizona on a regular basis..

Another thing when speaking of valley fever, the website www.valleyfeversurvivor.com - The source for up to date Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis) information must be a scaremongering propaganda website, right? It really seems that they exaggerate everything to the fullest and counts on that the worst conceivable scenario will happen if you get valley fever..

When I google valley fever I get a whole different, more realistic, picture of the disease, but according to the valleyfeversurvivorsite, the disease just seems so much worse.

What you you think?

I think your common sense and instincts here are excellent. Come on over!

Agree with Kimballette. Most people who do get Valley Fever either don't even know they are sick or don't know that they have anything other than a virus if they do feel ill. They treat the symptoms with over the counter medication and recover normally. You are highly unlikely to contract it as a tourist, who is not staying all day at construction sites or digging holes in the dirt.

I lived in Phoenix most of my life... And I never got it. Additionally, I never knew anyone that had it.

I'd say you'd be good to visit for a few weeks, at least.

Actually, you might have had it and never known you did. Kind of proves the point. ( I can't use myself, as I had a positive skin test for it as a teenager and looking back, we could figure out when I probably had it)

Agree with the prior posts. If you need further reassurance, read the Mayo Clinic information on Valley Fever. Take note of their number one prescribed treatment - rest and sleep, just like you would if you had the flu. For more serious, stubborn cases, anti fungal medication, which I am sure you could purchase in Europe - probably at a far lower cost than we can get it in the US.

Enjoy your trip and relax.

Shhhh. You're not doing a good job of convincing this person that it's okay to come here.

I think most cases are of the variety where you get it and get over it.
