Those truly were the Golden Years for Phoenix. Legend City, Phoenix Zoo, Papago Park, Botanical Gardens, and the Phoenix Giants (AAA baseball) playing at Phoenix Municipal Stadium all basically side by side. It's difficult to draw enough visitors during the summer to an outdoor venue. That said, I have many, many wonderful childhood memories of those places, especially Legend City and the stage shows of Wallace and Ladmo, Hub Kapp and the Wheel.
If you don't know the history, here's a link. Again, best of luck to you!

Actually, it would not be outside of reason to "dome" a park -

Maybe these new people can make a go of it (inside, air-conditioned waiting line areas, using cloth seats on rides rather than vinyl, etc.,) but I just wanted to warn them of the challenge they face.
However, I do believe that a major high-tec waterpark area of the main park would be beneficial in allowing at least part of the park to operate year round - their greatest income being made in the late Fall through early Spring months.
I wish them well.

Really good idea! Then it would be functional all year. A yes, I agree, our heat wave last 4 or 5 months people. It's just not the same.

Isn't that extremely expensive? If not, yes, another solution.

That's a rather defeated attitude. Who says it has to be outside? The Las Vegas Strip is one big amusement park, but most all the entertainment is indoors because of the excessive heat in the summer.
Dubai's temperatures can be even hotter than Phoenix's, but they have a brand new theme park that features skiing and snowboarding ... completely indoors. These things can be easily accomplished here if we quit thinking small. The best we seem to get is Castles and Coasters, or water parks like Big Surf (which is only open three months out of the year).
Let's stop all this naysay, and start making some positive progress that will benefit the economy ... as well as show off Phoenix as a truly great metropolitan area.

We used to go to Legend City in the summer all the time when we were teens....as long as we had a sixer of Schlitz Malt Liquor to share in the parking lot....and it was AFTER sundown! But, come to think of it.....we pretty much had the run of the place!

The area where Legend City used to be has been taken over by SRP. That was sometime in the early 1980s (1983 if i recall).
The park had a western theme ... so something similar to Legend City would be more suitable for near Tucson. Right near Old Tucson Studios would be a good location. But there again, the heat would be a problem if you build an outdoor amusement park ... and it wouldn't be very functional for three or four months out of the year.
The Phoenix area needs a Six Flags type of amusement park ... not another Legend City.

Thanks to all of you who responded and for all the good input. Coyote Canyon Theme Park is coming soon....Our website is under construction now.
As far as the weather in Phoenix..yes we know it's hot. The plan is to have plenty of cooling stations and definetly shaded air conditioned areas where the rides are. No one will be sitting on a 115 degree vinyl seat. Anyone who has been to Magic Mountain and/or Disneyland in the summer months, knows that its hot there too! We plan to make our guests as comfortable as possible.
This is an exciting plan and for any of you who can lend advise or things that you would expect in a theme park, please let us know!!!
