If you are new to the area, Ben Avery is a wonderful public shooting range operated by AZ Game and Fish. It has a separate trap & skeet target center.

The shotgun is the ultimate home defense weapon and normally safer in home defense situations as well as being more effective. Easier to hit an intruder, better stopping power when hit, less chance of over penetration and injury to other occupants and neighbors, takes less practice with a shotgun to become effective, etc.

Your other advice of choosing a revolver over a pistol is good advice just for simplicity and reliability but you're a bit off on the shotgun advice.

I'm hold a Master's rating with the defensive handgun yet I still use the shotgun as my primary home defense weapon and the handgun is a secondary weapon.

To the person that said it takes a couple days to purchase a handgun, that is not correct as there is no waiting period in Arizona and any resident that can legally own firearms can purchase a handgun in just the couple minutes it takes to fill out the paperwork and complete the federal background check.

To each his own in the good ole USA. At least with the handgun, it has a shorter barrel. When the intruder finds it while the person sleeps or takes it away, the shorter barrel will hurt less when he shoves it up the victim's wazoo.

If you are afraid of guns it's best you stay where you are. Some people just can't understand personal freedoms. Just remember without the right to bear arms your freedom of speech goes right down the drain with it.

LBTRS is giving great advice here. Your original post was for a HOME defense firearm. The boomstick is definitely the way to go.

Especially if you are a renter. A stray 9mm round going through a wall and hitting a neighbor will pretty much ruin the rest of your life through a combination of prison time and litigation.

If you wake up to a burglary, your coordination will be thrown by the combination of just being asleep while simultaneously being pumped full of adrenaline. Your hands WILL shake. You're likely only partially clothed and barefoot. Your eyes will still be blurry and need several seconds to adjust to the dark. The first time you pull the trigger in the dark, you'll be blinded by the flash. You want to make sure your first shot doesn't miss. Imagine shooting a shotgun at your bedroom door, now imagine shooting a 9mm at it. Which gun will make the bigger hole, and ruin the day of whoever is on the other side of the door?

Racking a shell is quite loud inside an apartment, and it's a universal "uh-oh, danger" sound. It's like hearing a rattlesnake, and 9 out of 10 burglars agree, it's time to head for the nearest exit. That's your best outcome. Cleaning up dead burglar is messier, more expensive, and more time consuming than replacing a stolen TV.

The added benefit is that a shotgun is fun. Flying clays are a lot more fun to shoot than paper targets, bottles or cans. I'm not a hunter, but I've heard small game hunting out here is excellent with all the quail & pheasant.

The suggestion wasn't to buy a 9mm but to buy a revolver- 9mm revolvers are rare & expensive, the most common choice in revolvers being a .38 which doesn't have nearly the recoil, noise, flash or over penetration issues you mentioned. Plus, you get *six* chances to hit something important. If you can't do that at close range, you need a bat, not a gun.

Shooting quail with a 12 gauge would no doubt yield an impressive splattering of feathers, but I wouldn't call it hunting.

If you read the thread, you'll find two suggestions to purchase a 9mm. Specifically a Glock 19 in a private party transaction.

Have you confused a Glock 19 for being a 9mm revolver?

Actually there was one suggestion to purchase a G19, and there were two suggestions to purchase a revolver without a caliber specified. I simply pointed out that a .38 wouldn't have the disadvantages you cited with a 9mm round.

I think you only have to be 18 years of age, with a valid Arizona driver's license, and with no criminal record, to be able to purchase a firearm. Any place that sells firearms, gun stores, and most pawn shops, only have to run an instant background check, which usually takes about 10 minutes.

As for the type of firearm that's best for defense, I'm not sure about shotguns, although they are easy weapons to use, you have to keep in mind that they can spread the shot parttern, depending on the distance, and it may not stop the intended target. A semi-automatic handgun in the 9mm Luger caliber is an excellent starter weapon and is very effective at stopping a criminal at a range of up to 50 yards, depending on the ammo and the placement of shots. The Ruger P89, which is made in Prescott, is a great deal for the money.

Like others have mentioned, the Ruger 1022 rifle, in the .22 LR caliber is also good for home defense situations.

Regardless of the firearm you decide to get, it's also a very good idea to get some training so you can get accurate shots, the reason for that is, if you miss the intended target, the bullet will go through the dry-wall and possibly hit an innocent person in the adjacent apartment or room, and you may be charged with a criminal offense, up to Negligent Homicide or use of a firearm.
