Kingman, if you need to make a stop-- the Canyon to Vegas in one day is certainly doable.

But if you go to the best area of the park on the NORTH rim then yes it would make sense to stay over a night along the way.

Yeah, its only about a 5 hour drive from the Canyon to Vegas (if your leaving out of the park nearest the watch tower), if you have the steam you could easily make it. But if you go on about an hr detour on your way to Vegas, stop in Lake Havasu City. I40 to 95 South

The one big bummer about the drive from Grand Canyon South Rim to Las Vegas is the relative dearth of potential stopovers. Williams is just 1 hour South of the park, so still leaves you with 3.5-4 hours drive to make next morning. Then there's Kingman, which is about 90 minutes Southeast of Las Vegas (info re: Kingman hotels ->: GrandCanyon.com – Properties Kingman, AZ, US ); at that point you might as well just head the rest of the way in.

Another option: if you don't mind tacking another hour or so onto your drive time and would like to experience the kitschy "frozen in time" character of Old Route 66, you might take the short detour up this road starting in Seligman AZ and ending in Kingman AZ. There are some lodging options (albeit very limited, the majority being "Mom & Pop" motels) along this route, such as Seligman, Peach Springs, Hackberry, Valentine, etc. Most of these properties can't be found on Expedia, Travelocity and the like since they're independently owned, so you would have to google "Arizona Route 66 hotels" or something like that.

Good luck!

How much time are you planning to spend at the Canyon? If you are driving up there that day, you want to spend as much time as possible, if not overnight there. So, if you don't want to overnight in the park, then Williams actually makes sense.
