If anyone is interested in how much we spend on education in Arizona compared to the rest of the country, especially in administration costs, here is the report from Arizona's Auditor General.

Here's a key that defines what goes into those categories. http://www.auditorgen.state.az.us/Re...rcent_calc.pdf

Instruction Support = Librarians, Teacher Training, Special-Ed & ESL support, etc.

Admin does not include teachers. Teachers are under Classroom Dollars.

Those numbers are yearly spending per student. The first 3 are Arizona in 2009, 2010, 2011. The 4th number is the US National Average in 2009.

Arizona Spending 2009, 2010, 2011. US National Average 2009
Administration 729, 721, 728. 1,147
Instruction Support 443, 432, 434. 535

In the last 30 years we have upped spending on education by many billions and yet our education system has declined dramatically. We spend more than any country on Earth and have some of the worst test scores. Obviously, throwing more money at this is not the answer...

Not in Arizona. Arizona's spending per pupil falls somewhere behind Ireland.

So what is the answer? And please include effective strategies with sources to show that these will work.

Since this thread is in the Arizona forum, please keep the discussion focused on our state, and not national trends and general political philosophies. Thanks.

Money isn't the answer. Safe learning environment with physical activity and a chance to learn higher then basic math. This isn't south central LA or inner NYC, this is the burbs of Phoenix. Direction from home or somewhere positive is an absolute must. Another problem is summer breaks are too long. 2 weeks are enough.
