Default Northern Arizona need help remembering

I'm trying to figure out where this area is - When I was a kid we used to take trips up into Northern Arizona with my Uncle. I remember this area but I don't know exactly where it is. It might be up near Cottonwood or Payson. I remember we were in what looked like a mining town and it had lots of industrial looking buildings and conveyor belts but the thing I remember the most was the piles of black rock or coal. Anyone know where I'm talking about? Any help is appreciated and photos would be a bonus!

It doesn't sound like the Payson area. I don't know what it looked like in the last 30 years, but I would think that some of that would still remain and I haven't seen anything like it anywhere around Payson. I know it doesn't pinpoint it for you, but at least you can scratch the Mogollian Rim off your list.

It sounds like you MIGHT be talking about the Cottonwood/Clarkdale area. We have two HUGE piles of tailings from the mining days with most of the old buildings intact. One is near the Verde Canyon Railroad in Clarkdale and the other is by the fairgrounds in Cottonwood. Those huge piles are the result of smeltering and there's been talk of taking them down to see if there aren't some more metals in them.
Other than that I can't think of any other places like that.

I looked at the current satelite images of Cottonwood and Clarkdale, I can't tell. Maybe too much has changed. I remember it being very industrial mining looking and everywhere I looked seemed to be piles of black stuff and conveyers and some sort of almost power plant looking buildings. Anyway I'll keep looking...thats what I do

Def sounds like Clarkdale or Jerome; both are right by Cottonwood.

I've been reading this thread, curious too, what town the OP is referring to. The mention of black rock and coal is what's baffling. Jerome and Clarkdale were mining towns, but for copper, not coal. The nearest coal mines are (were) located on the Navajo Nation near Kayenta and Black Mesa. Black rock though, is a type of limestone. Jerome did have a limestone quarry
