Default Lodging: Willcox, Tombstone, Sierra Vista or Bisbee

I will be driving through Arizona with my father, and will be staying in the Willcox, Tombstone, Sierra Vista and Bisbee areas Wednesday and Thursday, October 17th & 18th. In which of these cities should we stay? Friday morning we will be leaving for Albuquerque, NM via Interstate 10.

Any suggestions? My dad enjoys desert scenery, gambling and old historical towns.

Tombstone is neat during the day, but doesn't have much at night...and doesn't have much for restaurants or lodging either. If you have time, tour Tombstone during the day and stay in either Bisbee or Sierra Vista that night. Enjoy!

I would say Bisbee, it has a lot of historical ambiance and is pretty much centrally located for your trip. Then you could sightsee there, then up to Tombstone for the day then go through Sierra Vista up to Kartchner Caverns. I'd stay at the motels near Karchner Caverns that eve in Benson.

If you're interested in the caverns, be sure to call ahead for reservations. We drove all the way there only to find out that we couldn't get in because they're booked months in advance because it's one of the few remaining "live" caves in the US. Our kids were so disappointed. eggalegga, I suggest you call them even though your trip is in just a few days because they might have an opening. Good luck!

Thanks again for more info.

I keep seeing that the tours of Kartchner Caverns are guided but it doesn't state if it's a walking tour or if you ride along in that little trolley/train thing. Does anyone know for sure? My dad is disabled and walking is a challenge for him.

A couple of comments about the Kartchner Caverns tours.

1) I read recently that attendence has really dropped off and the stories about the tour always being full are no longer the case. I know it was fairly full on our tour, but not completely booked. To be safe however, I would still book in advance.

2) You ride a tram from the tour center up to the entrance to the cavern, after which you walk (easy walk) throughout the cavern itself. Entering the cavern is kind of like entering Fort Knox - you pass through no less than 4 heavy steel (freezer type) doors.

BTW - A very interesting tour.

Ken

I've never had to make reservations. They always seem to have a lot of tickets available and fit everyone in. Many time tours cancel out at the last minute.
But you can always call ahead just to see.

Bisbee has a fun place to stay, the Shady Dell RV Park.

They have a bunch of restored 1940's vintage travel trailers and a diner.

Welcome to The Shady Dell in Bisbee, Arizona
