Oh, and this is a tangent, but since I'm gathering that living in the pines in Prescott is expensive/dangerous... What I'm looking for as a runner/hiker/biker is a place where I can be within a mile (preferably a lot less) from some nice trails. I'd like to see mountains and pines from my house and on my runs, but don't have to live right among them. Since we'll be retired, I don't need to live right in town, but would like to be within a few miles of a full service supermarket and within, say, 10 miles of a full shopping center...

Any more ideas?

No problem - you can do that and be less than 5 miles (10 minutes) from a shopping center and 5 minutes from a supermarket. There is a huge variety of topography in the Prescott area - from "in the pines" to "views of mountains". Sounds like the area that would work for you would be in the Prescott Lakes/Willow Hills/Cliff Rose area. Open views (mountains in the distance - no pines), and trails around Willow Lake and through The Dells. There's all sorts of bike trails and hiking trails close to that general area.

PS - What's the "dangerous" part? I've heard expensive before, but not dangerous. Please expound.

I always try to call it PreSCOTT as that is what it looks like. I always thought it was wrong to call it PRESSKIT but it seems like everyone calls it that, so I wasn't sure. Now I'm glad to know that I was in the right.

When I lived in Arizona, only tourists and snowbirds called Prescott "Pres Scott" locals always called it "Press Kit"

Gretchen,
Qwik is probably referring to the fire danger inherent to living in forested areas, especially as he and his wife are relocating from SoCal. As gorgeous as it is to live among the tall pines, one does become a bit 'gun-shy' after experiencing a wildfire.

I have relatives who came from Dubois, PA. Yes, it's pronounced "do-BOYZ".

Yeah, how DO you get "ARE-can-saw" out of "Arkasas" and "MAC-in-awe" out of "Mackinac" if Prescott can't be "PRESS-kit"??

It is Presskit! To explain it they say it rhymes with biscuit.

I was kinda surprised with another city name. In my mother tongue we call Chicago CHicago. Here I got used to calling it SHicago. Then it turns out the locals there say CHicago... Go figure.
