My husband and I drove through Colorado City on our way to Utah. We were warned beforehand that if we got off the main road and started driving around the side streets, it wouldn't be long before we would be followed. Sure enough, it wasn't five minutes after we entered Colorado City and turned onto a side street before we were followed by a black SUV. Every turn we made, it made. We pulled into the grocery store parking lot and so did the SUV. Needless to say we got the heck out of there.
Non-polygamist DPS officers need to set up camp there along with the FBI and rid that damn town of all the brain washed weirdos.

The government should butt out and leave these poor people to worship as they choose.

And they should ignore the rape, molestation, forced marriage, illegal use of police and welfare fraud too, eh? What else?

In many ways I do agree with your comment, as people have the right to practice their spiritual beliefs without interference from governments. However, I do think Colorado City would likely be less stigmatized and scrutinized if they could portray more transparency. For example, the Amish people of Lancaster and Bird In Hand Pennsylvania welcome tourists and there is a lot of mutual respect for boundaries and peoples spiritual ways of life.

Those other communties have no relation whatsoever to the FLDS. You're missing the point. No one cares about some wacky cult practicing their religion. When it comes to forcing teenage girls to marry older, sometimes related men, exiling younger boys to cut down on competition with the older men, using state-chartered police to enforce a Taliban-like moral code, locking up disobedient kids or wives for months or years at a time, committing egregious welfare and and tax fraud and hiding it all behind their religion, well then, there's a problem there and it's got nothing to do with the gubmint not liking a religion and everything to do with them enforcing laws.

Ya know Rick Lee, I would not choose a FLDS or a homosexual way of life but at the same time, through out the world there are many countries where it is a major crime to engage in homosexual behavior unlike here in the USA where homosexual behavior is now accepted in the Main Stream Media.
There are also more countries than you can count on your two hands and two feet where the age of consent is no older than 12, 13 or 14 years of age for girls. So who are we to make these judgments? I have nothing against a polygamous life style, homosexual life style and so on. Live and Let Live. And your comment about Welfare fraud is a very weak argument, as you are singling out only this specific group of people who just want to be left alone. However, one remedy for potential child abuse would be a child protective services within the city itself as long as the social program is sensitive to this particular religion.

Yeah, I think most criminals DO want to be left alone. The rest of your post is irrelevant. The FLDS is engaging in criminal activity and it's far from a victimless crime, unilke homosexuality between consenting adults in countries that ban it. Molesting or raping kids, forcing them into marriage under the age of consent is flat out criminal. What don't you get about that?

Molesting and raping children or raping adults is a crime but you are assuming that everyone who practices this religion is a Molester or Rapist! I do not assume that and will not be part of a Old English Witch Hunt whereas when you label a group of people that way just because you do not agree with their life style you are no better than a KKK Clansman! It appears you assume every person in that town is a pervert and child abuser. I just do not buy that and by the way the age of consent in some states is even as young as 14.
Finally, as I said earlier if the town would become more transparent it could help silence the negative main stream press it is getting. But many orthodox communities, like Hasidic Jews, do isolate their people to prevent dilution and acculturation. That is how it is all over the world, different cultures, religions, customs and so on. Historically those who are most agitated and disturbed about the customs and life styles of others are usually discontent with their present state of being.
