Why would you be considering Colorado City, Missingcol?
Although in a beautiful area North of The Canyon, Colorado City is almost exclusively (maybe even totally) inhabited by the Polygamists associated with the Warren Jeffs Cult. Unless you are a member, I doubt if you would receive a warm welcome.

I agree; although both Arizona and Utah are in the midst of taking apart Colorado City/Hilldale piece by piece--------several of the 'police officers' have been stripped of their certifications, etc.
And; Jeffs is in jail for probably a long time.

Most common way to make a living in Colorado City is to take multiple wives, have many children, and bleed the welfare system.
I had a Flagstaff-based sales territory for a while, and was strongly advised by a customer in Kanab not to proceed further west into Hilldale or Colorado City. After learning more and reading Krakauer's book Under the Banner of Heaven, I now realize how great this advice given to me was.

I agree, ArizonaBear.
Hopefully these two towns in what could be considered one of the most beautiful spots in the West will return to normal in the future but, for the time being, they are basically NOT FRIENDLY to visitors. Many of the inhabitants have been brainwashed from day one and are blind followers who have no intentions of giving up any time soon.
Actually, I have a feeling UNSAFE TO OUTSIDERS is a possibility and more appropriate.

Thanks very much for all the replys. I am just quite curious how people over there make living? They have to do something to make their end meets. I can't believe that U.S., as the most modern county, still has places like this. It is really a free country.

Unfortunately, missingcol, there's a simple answer to your question.
THEY HAVE BEEN SCAMMING THE WELFARE SYSTEM FOR YEARS!

My post about bleeding the welfare system was not a joke. That is honestly how many of these "families" make ends meet. Keep in mind that the federal government only recognizes one wife, so the other "wives" in the plural marriage are single moms w/ multiple kids in the eyes of the gov't.

How about schools? Doesn't the town have a school district and any schools? Those people may still be good people but not got enough educated. The gov. should take the responsibility for the change, not unlimited provide welfare, IMO.

The whole area is a mess, and schools are just one part of the mess. This is from wikipedia...
Education
Colorado City is a part of the Colorado City Unified School District. There is only one school, the Colorado City K-12 Public School, in Colorado City. Many FLDS-affiliated board members resigned due to the political takeover of the district.
The Arizona state government attempted to take over the district in 2005 due to mismanagement.[7][8][9]
In addition to the district public school, there is a charter school, Masada Charter School, serving students in grades K-9. The charter school is outside of the Colorado City town limits in the community of Centennial Park.
