Default Moving to Yuma

My daughter (23) has taken a professional job in Yuma and is moving there in a month. I'm helping her move and would like information about the safest areas of the city. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've lived in Yuma for the past 15 years. Once you are "out of the City proper" any of the areas will meet your requirements.

I live 7 miles from the center of the City out on what we call the South Mesa. Minimum 2 Acre parcels. No noise. Great place.

Be prepared for BUSY traffic conditions. The winter visitors are coming back. All 125,000 of them. They'll drive 35 in a 55, turn left from the right lane and vice versa, and drive you crazy. The restaurants will be packed, and plan on doing your grocery shopping in the wee hours of the morning.

Even with all that, Yuma is great. Water and Sand Dune recreation. Plenty of golf courses. An now just about any store you may desire.

If you need a 4BR home with acreage, 30x50 Shop Building, I've got one for sale.

George

I also live on acreage "out on the mesa" ~ 7 miles from town but in an irrigated section - grass, trees, citrus, alfalfa, etc. Very similar to what Gilbert, Arizona, used to look like before it got built up. IMO, this is the best place for a family moving to Yuma - horses, 4-H, chores, etc. Something for kids to do besides play with x-boxes. Acreage is too much work for a single gal, though, especially in an irrigated area where you'd have to cut grass.

Where will she be working? Lots of previous posters have recommended the Foothills (Mesa del Sol) but IMO, that's far too far if you're working in town. Fine if you're out at the college but the snowbird traffic makes this seemingly short commute into Yuma unreal in the winter months. Who wants to move to a small town, then spend a half hour driving each way? There are some newer upscale developments popular with professionals boundaried by Avenue B and Avenue C and 24th and 32nd streets - look at the Barkley Ranch website. An area if you're looking for condos is Elks Lane which is right next to the hospital. There's a neighborhood of really nice townhouses right near the convention center and Desert Hills Golf Course, also convenient to the hospital. I'm sorry I can't think of the name but any realtor would know. I think the clue is to get a good realtor to show you around.

What kind of employment is out there? Are there any large aerospace companies or anything like a Raytheon, Goodrich, etc? My husband just got back from there for a work trip, and liked it. I've never been there. Now I'm curious. He said it was very rural. I'm a country girl, so that's a great thing in my opinion.

Boeing & Northrop operate at Marine Corps Air Station. MCAS and Yuma Proving Ground (Army) are a big part of the Yuma economy. Quite a few military stay around and go into the private sector or come back here to retire. Medical professionals are desperately needed, we're a "medical shortage area" - meaning that if you graduate and work here, you get help repaying your student loans. The bulk of jobs are in agriculture, tourism (snowbirds), and retail (Yuma recently got a "mall" with all the big box stores & restaurants). The ready supply of illegals tends to keep wages down for low-skill jobs. Bilingual is a big plus.

Does she know where she is living yet? I think the foothills are the best area, but there are no apartments out there so unless she'd going to rent a house that wouldn't work.

Good luck with helping her move! If your coming from a cold climate then you'll LOVE Yuma now! Should be mid to high seventies and sunny your whole trip!!!
