You can put in some cameras to capture who ever came here or get a watchdog to startle them . Of course, the first important thing is tell the police the detailed status. I think the cop will patrol this area more than before. All belows actions will make your house more secure.

While not the exact same scenario as Granny's (the OP), when I lived in a certain town that did have a drug problem I used to still go ahead and leave my doors unlocked whenever I left the house.

I had a two fold reason. One was to let my higher power (God) watch over the house and the other was in sync with the first. Kind of reverse psychology. If a 'perp' came to my door and found it unlocked they would think that someone was home. One day when I was going to be gone all day long on a mini road trip, I thought, "I should lock my door". When I got home, the door had been kicked in and stuff was stolen.

I haven't ever locked my doors since.

This.

And you stayed true to your sweet nature and probably told them your upcoming schedule.....i.e., when you're leaving; when you'll be back.

There's some rotten spirits in any town.

Hopefully the damage was not too bad and yes Granny, do keep up with your marksmanship skills.

Once you're settled in the doggies will help out a lot and no......you shouldn't have to worry too much about the free ranging cattle.

Just keep your distance when it comes to mama and her calf......

How to install a redneck home security system:
1. Go to a second-hand store and buy a pair of men's used size 14-16 work boots.
2. Place them on your front porch, along with several empty beer cans, a copy of Guns & Ammo magazine and several NRA magazines.
3. Put a few giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines.
4. Leave a note on your door that reads: 'Hey Bubba, Big Jim, Duke and Slim, I went to the gun shop for more ammunition. Back in an hour. Don't mess with the pit bulls -- they attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up real bad.I don't think Killer took part in it but it was hard to tell from all the blood. PS - I locked all four of 'em in the house. Better wait outside.'
5. INSTALLATION COMPLETE!
What a security expert, that I know of, said to tape a sign to the door works from home on phone all day UPS leave package at door. But your redneck way sounds more fun

I "chose" to live in Dolan Springs. Yep that is right I CHOSE to live here. I love it here. I love the people here. With any small town there are good and bad in all things in life. Same goes for big cities. The thing is if you don't like it here then move. It won't hurt my feelings...promise. Try living in California for a couple of years how it is currently, you'll miss this type of lifestyle. Not only I live here, but my hard working adult children have transplanted here also by choice. Three work in town and are not relatives of any owners. Just hard workers=Job security.

Insurance. Cameras with recording device. Have the recorder hidden so burglars can't take the SD. Getting to know your neighbors is an idea. When you are their you can take care of any problem people. Don't feel bad,It's about like that everywhere.
I had a trucker tell me of how every time he left for a few weeks of driving his place got robbed. I guess local tweekers watched him drive off and smiled.

I bet if he drove off and left a friend with a shotgun inside he'd only get robbed one last time.

I own a company that teaches firearms and home and church security. We have worked with three churches this past year on immediate physical security and long range security.
Here are some quick tips I use at my own home.
1. Lights including a motion light on each side of the house.
2. If you can afford it have a membership with a security company that electronically monitors the house.
3. Put up you own cameras if you can't afford the security company. Police depend on these videos and they get convictions on the rather quickly. KOLD will show the tales on their news shows.
4.Have a dog. If you are afraid or can't have a big dog then get a little one that will bark all the time. I have a rescue German Shep from Green Valley and we put her through training. She has bonded with our kids and absolutely no sales people who come to our house will stand 10 feet or more from the door after they ring the bell.
5. Lock your gates.
6. Have a gun IF you will go through a safety class. County Parks and Rec have firearms classes.
7. Have a phone tree with your neighbors.

I have cameras, a monitored alarm system, a gun and, if all that fails, insurance.

If you're going to be gone, make to place look to be lived in. Get a security system. Empty houses are prime targets. Talk with all immediate neighbors, even offer one of them $50 to watch your place. Guaranteed they would do a better job at watching your place. Other than that, securing all the windows, inside metal bars, double locks on all doors should do the trick.
