It is best not to try to understand how they are calculated. Property tax rates are roughly 1% of your home's value. (They are actually less than that, but don't tell anyone.) My property taxes actually decreased last year! If you REALLY want to know how they are calculated, you can view an example calculation on the Yavapai County website: http://ww2.co.yavapai.az.us/departments/asr/AsrTaxBillInstruction.asp (broken link)

Live in Phoenix. My house is worth 390,000 and our taxes are 1,400 for the year. Mine also went down. Taxes are cheap here.

Holy smokes!! I live in Maine and owned a condo. Very small condo. Owning a condo you do not own the land etc. (You do pay association fees that I am sure help cover taxes on the land etc.) With a condo you own "from the studs in". I paid over $1200/year. We are moving to Arizona in Nov. Taxes being lower will be a bonus for us.

Don't boo hoo hoo to us about property taxes in California. You have the old Proposition law that keeps CA property taxes lower than they might be. Don't like paying into a broken CA state goverment? Sell & take your bloated home equity and move to another state - lots of Californians have been doing that & shocking other states housing markets in the process, but keep coming - there's lots of wheeler dealers here in AZ to take your CA money.
