I am looking for a place to retire with my husband. My daughter suggested Lake Havasau City. Can someone tell me what it is like there? Is there enough arts/theater/shopping/etc to provide non-water oriented entertainment? What is the housing market like and the job market if we were looking for part time work

Have you looked here: Lake Havasu City ?

IMO, LHC is more of a resort destination city than a retirement city, not to say that retirees don't live there, but it does not offer many of the amenities you are looking for. As a resort location, the economy will be based on providing services...if you are without a specific, in demand talent, typical low entry level wages should be expected.

If you are not interested in the water activities, what is drawing you to LHC...just your daughters recommendation ? In order to determine whether LHC is right for you, at least 2 visits would be in order, one in Dec/Jan (coldest), one in July/August (hottest).

Regards

Lots of people have second homes there, there are a lot of retirees there. Economy is largely service industry, as gemstone said. There's not much arts/theater/shopping there either. Those who do retire there either like the water, or are just looking for a small town with warm to hot dry weather. Perhaps proximity to CA is a draw. If lots of arts/theater/shopping are what you are looking for in your retirement community, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

I've lived in Havasu for 33 years, and if I ever retire it'll be here!

There's a few plays and orchestral performances now and again. A smaller outdoors type mall, not convenient.
No museums to speak of. Smaller art fairs and such from time to time.

Housing is relatively cheap. Folks from Cali still get twice as much house for half the price!

Bad job market in general. Some of my seniors (I'm a doc) work part time at Kmart and the like.

The best air in the country if it's not too windy. No crime. Very short and easy commutes.

What a difference from Chicago!

Thanks everyone! I do like the water, but like variety also. This area is the closest I can get to my daughter and grandkids without living in California!

Laughlin/BHC gives you all the water stuff, plus tons of casino related activities, which include much cheaper dining and entertainment options.

I lived in Havasu for 14 years and you would have to pay me now to live there. Urggh. The summers beat me up one too many times. I now live near Prescott, AZ that offers culture, that of which Havasu lacks. The air in Havasu is starting to get smog from California. Medical is lacking and so is shopping. Consider Prescott, AZ. I can be in Scottsdale in 90 minutes. Never would I ever consider moving back to Havasu. Yuck.

Arts, theater, culture? HAHAHAHA, um no. Havasu is a dirty town with next to nothing to do if you dont boat. My wife grew up there and my father in law still lives there, we dont go unless we have to go to visit him. Its a dying town and not a place you should go if things like the arts are important to you.
