Hi all. Im originally from NY, moved to NC 9 yrs ago. Recently we're considering a move to AZ. Having a 3.5 yr old, Im needing to research more, since we cant just pack up and go. Im looking for a city/town with a great school district. I know that every city has crime, but would prefer as low as possible of course. Housing that isnt outrageous, looking to pay no more than 215k. Tuscon? Phoenix? I have friends in Phoenix but read its not a great place to raise children, would you agree? Im sure there are better areas than others everywhere, Im just trying to get as educated as I can, having never been there yet. Im thinking of taking a trip just to check it out. Looking to move before my son starts preschool in 2 yrs. Id like all bad and good things. Thanks so much!!

There is a LOT of information here already, so if you "need to research more", that's a good place to start to read about "all the good and bad things". The broad statement that "Phoenix is not a good place to raise children" is incorrect, IMO. While AZ in general is dismal in terms of education funding, money is not the sole factor in determining whether a child gets a good education, and there are good schools here in Phoenix and in the metro area as a whole.

In terms of jobs, the two metro areas have the most opportunities generally. A lot depends on the fields you'd be looking in. Having job[s} before you move, or a large cushion to get you through, is critical. After you've done a lot of reading and researching, you do need to make a trip out here to see what you think, as the west in general, including Phoenix, is very different from where you have lived before.

Do some more research to learn more and to focus the questions you mght ask here more. Good luck!

Observer53's advice is spot on.

As an FYI, here's a list of AZ school district rankings:

Prescott and Flagstaff would be my choices to raise a kid. High paying jobs might be hard to come by in this areas however. What kind of work are you looking for? These are both mid size "cities" in the cooler higher elevations of northern Arizona. Pretty good place to live and raise children if you can find work.
