Where are the Jobs in AZ, unemployed over 1 yr
I moved here from WI, because of the economy and that I heard the businesses can't find people with "good work ethics". Well I've been here for over a year and still no job, despite the fact that I owned 2 businesses for the past 20 yrs, been employed for a company that maintains nuclear power plants across the country. To get into the nuclear power industry requires FBI background clearance, clear physco tests, drug test ect. Plus each power plant site requires that you understand & pass 8 different tests by 80% about nuclear power requlations and safty before you can set foot on their property - which must be learnt in 5 days and passed.
I owned was a remodeling business, which where I used to live has 2 of the projects I remoldeled is on their web site promoting how historically accurate homes are done -http://www.villageprofile.com/wisconsin/elkhorn/elkhorn1.html#homes
(if you want to see the before & after pics, just ask !)
I have put out 1000's of apps and the guy at DES has seen my resume and has no clue why nobody gets back, even for simple warehouse jobs.
Is it a matter of over qualified?
I'm ready to move back to Wi

I really don't know what to tell you.
However, personally, I'd rather live in Wisconsin than in Arizona.
Do what you gotta do.

Ask jesusislord he seems to think that unemployment is at 4%.
Actually, my feeling is that u probably need to be Mexican or know someone to get a job. I hope I am wrong, but I'm probably not.
You are not along many whites & probably blacks too, can't get jobs. When I was in Vegas 2 young guys were telling me that they could not get jobs, all the construction jobs were Mexicans and boss wouldn't even think of hiring them. This was not the only case I heard of. Good Luck.
PS you might stick around until after Jan. when hopfully the law will run the Mexicans out of the country. Then even slow contractors will have to hire you.

Sad to say I just spent 6 months looking for job and finally got one a couple weeks ago. I ran into the same thing where I was well qualified for jobs and even tried to get a few warehouse jobs and never even got a call back. I pretty much new that when I interviewed with a hispanic man that I wouldn't be getting the job. Some of the jobs required that I speak Spanish, English was optional. I'm happy now though, I'm in a perfect situation. Just had to be patient. The best part was the employers calling me back and offering me a job because they are losing their illegal employees. I was happy to tell them I might get back in touch with them later.

twin.spin - have you tried looking for positions and posting your resume online at CareerBuilder.com? I have a friend who just got hired for a tech job this week by posting her resume there. She says she was contacted consistently through that website. Sounds like it's the website all the big companies use.
Also, have you checked on the City and County websites? That's where any municipal job openings will show up.
Lastly, maybe your resume needs "tweaking" to highlight your most important job experience. Things have changed over the years, and what was once considered a good resume and cover letter is out the door these days. I think there's people out there that specialize in resumes and cover letters.
Hopefully, you'll find something soon!!!! Wishing you the best in your job hunt!

PS on my last post - Of course, construction is about the hardest hit industry in AZ (actually most of the nation), so any job associated with that, or any job that an unskilled laborer would likely apply for (such as a warehouse job) is going to have a TON of applicants. Up here in the Prescott area, I've heard that the City and County will have over 200 applicants for entry-level and clerical positions, but they're having a difficult time filling the openings for jobs requiring more training/education.
Just a thought - you might have more success applying for jobs requiring the most expertise.

Gretchen,
I live in Cottonwood and have exausted your suggestion with the most expertise. The others you mention was my "just got to find something" column. The DES guy is from our area, which surprises him about the responce to my resume qualifications. As somebody else said, discrimination is alive and well -
Also I have done the on-line job posts - Jobing, Career builder, Monster, Indeed, Az workforce, AZ State Jobs, Job Fairs - The DES rep said that (I kid you not) "Unfortunately most employers don't know how to use the on-line application software that they are insisting applicants use". Its just stupidity in bloom. Your suppose to take an impersonable format (on-line apps) make it personable to get reconized to have an impersonable responce. Then have an inpersonable / personable cover letter and thank you follow up so that if your called on the phone you can make an appointment to fill out an app in person again. Every employer says the on-line app is not officall so you need to fill an app out again (unless you state something incorrectly on the on-line version). Then they wonder why applicants aren't available?
Plus it doesn't help that I'm white, male, near 50, confident about life and whom I'm am, and have children who's the same age that does the hiring.
