Does anyone have any suggestions for an out of the way camping destination to get away from the heat. We do have a Rubicon but will be hauling our aliner pop up trailer that is not lifted Looking for a good location to let the pups run leash free. Water would be nice but not necessary, we mainly want to get away from people and heat! We've been to the rim but maybe looking towards Tuscon this time around. Trying to keep it within 2 hours or so from Phoenix for a Sun-Tue camp out.

What about East?
One we have done is outside of Globe on the reservation and on up and camped in a remote spot on the Black River. Need a permit and I think it was the San Carlos. Be aware there were some areas heavily trashed so avoid those spots.
Next would be over to Safford to Roper Lake State Park.

Yes, we've run into the trash too. It's so sad to see We have also been out to Safford and Roper Lake but as I recall it was quite a distance.

I'm intrigued by this Black River, can you tell me some more or provide approximate area coordinates. I've been Google earthing a lot of places but feel so limited with the little trailer since giving up tent camping and adding three dogs who act like wild spider monkey's If it were just me, the Rubi and a tent I could climb up a mountain if I wanted.

Take a look at the East Fork of the Black River. It is east of the reservation in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.

East Fork is beautiful as well but its a drive.

Phx to San Carlos shows to be a 2 hr drive and then get permit and take the 1001 road north to river. There will be a hydro plant windmill at that junction if I recall. Go left and there is a established trashed camping area. We went east along the river and found a secluded spot under some trees. There was a river crossing just east of us where some folks crossed.
Your trailer should be just fine back in there. There are signs warning of black bears but we never saw any.

Sounds great, I have always wanted to check out San Carlos! 2 hours doesn't seem bad and is about the same time it takes to get anywhere out of the heat!
