Default Is there a place near the 4 corners in Arizona that is affordable and has few bugs?

Would like to move from MT to AZ, but need to find somewhere that has few bugs and an affordable cost of living. I haven't been to AZ yet and would like some input on the best places to visit in the 4 corners area. My daughter is moving to Arizona and I would like to live near her and this is the area she has chosen. As yet we are just going to vacation and look around.

You and your daughter need to actually visit AZ first so you can have an idea of what you're even looking for. The four corners area is dominated by Indian reservations-- especially the Navajo and Hopi. Unless if you're a member of their tribe, forget it.

Great advice, vegaspilgrim

However, you forgot one important point . . . there is lots of nothing there!

I love Arizona but I doubt very seriously if I could live in that particular part of the state.

Default Copper Basin Arizona area Real Estate BOOM

about the only affordable area nearby is the Copper Basin area of Arizona, Near the towns of Winkelman/ Hayden at the Confluence of the Gila and San Pedro Rivers.
although these areas have beautiful scenery, River access, Hunting, Hiking etc. the prices of real estate have remained low due to the economy (Copper Mines Closing Down). however, it appears that these areas (located Centrally between Phoenix and Tucson off az. 77) may be one of the few areas that are going to actually see an economic and real estate Boom in the Very near future due to the price of Copper and the Re-opening of Idle
Copper Mines.especially the BHP and Phelps Dodge planned Multi Billion Dollar Copper Mine Project in Nearby Superior. developers are already Jumping on the Bandwagon as a new 204 acre, 200 House Development 7 miles north of Winkelman, Az. is Due to Break Ground in the spring of 2008.
also, there are plans to expand the school District operations by an estimated 400 more students to the Winkelman / Hayden school district, along with various improvement projects to include 100,000 dollars for improvements to the Winkelman Flats Park located directly on the Gila river across the Hwy from Winkelman. there really isnt any down side to buying real estate here - you can pick up fixer homes from 50,000 to 130,000 dollars!!!
(at least for now you can)
anyway, Good luck on your search, best wishes -Kevink040.

Well, Kearny and Dudleyville aren't bad but I wouldn't live in Hayden or Winkleman.

Kind of a moot point anyway since they're several hundred miles from Four Corners.

Has your daughter been to the area before? As far as housing in the Four Corners area, I can tell you this; the Arizona Highway Patrolmen assigned to that area live in Cortez, CO. If you aren't Navajo or a non-tribal teacher, etc working for the Tribe, I believe Cortez is about your best and maybe only choice.

I can't imagine much to do in Arizona around the Four Corners region. Southwest Colorado would be nice though, check out Durango, Colorado, it's beautiful country around there. Cortez, Colorado might be another option.

To live in the 4 corners area, you must first be a Native Indian, then able to sell beads at a roadside stand, do rain dances when it's hot and dry.
As mentioned before, Cortez is a beautiful small laid back town with lots of scenery, hunting and fishing not far away and clean clear skies. It's the typical small town life where probably everybody knows everybody. You're also not too far from Mesa Verde Indian ruins and Durango where the small guage railroad is very popular that runs to Silverton and back. Pretty country up there with 4 seasons of weather.

I worked in the area for several years and is true, all reservation land. Cortez and Durango very nice. Also, if the OP wants to live in AZ, there is Page and Lake Powell area, also nice, or was several years ago. Across the border into Utah is St. George, pretty little town. Have heard it has grown and some increased crime, etc.

For 120 miles west and 80 south of the intersection of the Four Corners is all Indian Reservation. A very different kind of living there. The Cortez/Durango area, on the Colorado side, is nice but getting expensive, as it has been "discovered."

Ahh yes, another sea of concrete block and pantile roofs to make Winkelman look just like every other Arizona city that has been "developed." Don't know if that's such a good thing anymore or not. Just my two cents. I'll go away now.
