Teaching kids to be comfortable around guns and how to handle them safely is a necessary skill in a country of 300 MILLION guns. We can argue about *which* guns to teach kids about, and when to teach them, but it's amazingly insensitive to attack a man's intelligence when you weren't there, you didn't know him, and his body isn't even cold yet.

Once again, you might not want a gun for yourself, you might "hate" them personally - but the fact is, 40% of your neighbors have them in their houses, and they aren't going to go away in your lifetime. Dancing in the blood of an accident victim isn't going to make any friends, nor will it lead to solutions that make everyone safer.

Yeah, but this was more about Las Vegas than AZ. The gun range is a Vegas tourist stop.

I wasn't even thinking about firearms or shootings. I was thinking about ALL the things Arizona has been raked over the coals for the last few years. Just one thing after another. This is just one more blip in the state's reputation. I have nothing against guns. I DO have a LOT against stupidity.

Then why the heck is all the media harping about Arizona? Are the people involved from here or what?

I don't think they've been id'd yet, but rumored to be from NJ.

"Mohave County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Trish Carter told the Las Vegas Review-Journal the family was vacationing from New Jersey, but there was no mention of their home town"

Saw that quote here:

N.J. girl in Arizona Uzi accident not 9-year-old competitive shooter from Franklin Township, father says | NJ.com

Agreed tho Cali's rep is worse than ours. The 9 yo kid thing hit me too because I live here in Mohave County.

With them it's like "it's Arizona. What else would you expect from parents out there." The problem is the family is from New Jersey, a state where guns are but banned. I suppose that draws them to places like this range where they can do things they can't at home.

We're still considered the 'Wild West' ya all know. Some of them folks think we all ride horses, carry big guns, mosey up to the saloon's bar, have a shot o' whiskey and challenge the dudes to a gunfight. Yippee kayeee'.

Boy have you got the wrong guy. I have CCW permits from AZ, UT, and NV and own all manners of guns. I taught my girls how to shoot. I think I'm perfectly qualified to say that encouraging a 9 y/o kid to fire a machine gun at a rental range is stupid beyond belief. [snip- personal ]

I'd rep you twice for the emoticon alone.
