I'm not disputing your facts. I agree that rhetoric has occurred for a long time. The reason I think it has gotten worse is due to popular media and the internet. Fox News and MSNBC galvanized this partisanship. Some will say they are only reponding to what the public desires. However, I think they antagonize both sides to create ratings and many feed into it. This has only been made worse through blogs and websites. I'm not suggesting partisanship is new. It's always existed but it is much more polarized today and I think you will find the majority has embraced this opinion including the politicians themselves. Even Jeff Flake has discussed this.

Such interesting answers, thank you!

I think I'll disagree about Goldwater, Bondurant. Okay, that's before my time, I'll admit, but it seems to have only become so flagrant much more recently. Also, since you took the opportunity to slam the Democrats with your post, I'll mention that whenever any organization does serious fact-checking on television ads, it's the Republicans who seem to be less truthful. Although - maybe you weren't talking about truth as much as lack of facts?

I agree with you, azriverfan, that it's much more polarized today. Some expert traced it back to Newt Gingrich. But I think a major problem is that TV wants to showcase some antagonistic sound-bite rather than cover the boring facts. And I don't even object to much to the negativity itself - it's the negativity in the absence of facts. And, yes, I've heard that too, that Republicans demand that their people stay on-target, on-message. (Which, now that I think of it, is a bit anti-American, isn't it?)

Bummer, that's a good question about print vs. TV...I think to me the TV ads are worse, maybe because they're so in-your-face.

I didn't "slam the Democrats". I stated a fact that they started the slanderous attack ads on television when they went after Goldwater.

Again, these types of ads are not new. You may have only noticed recently but they've been around as long as I can remember and I'm only 32.
