I would stay off 260 this time of year. It could be smooth sailing, or you could get socked in with a snowstorm. I'm voting I17 to I40. While 87 is nice, it's not much more so than I17, and it (87) is constant up-and-down grades (6%). I40 sucks on scenery after Flagstaff, but 377 isn't heavy on scenery, either.

If you do go the Beeline route, fill up in Payson and Holbrook. In Holbrook, I would suggest going to the Hopi Travel Plaza (go east on I40 to the exit to 77N). I haven't managed to remember to stop there, but the gas stations on the run up to the interstate are either expensive or horrible to get in and out of with a passenger vehicle (IMO).

Thanks so much for all the replies, really good advice and very much appreciated.

I was erring on the side of caution and going I17 and looks like this is definitely the way to go.

I certainly know what you mean 'jamies' about being stuck in a trail of cars following a truck/RV!

cab591 - Thank you for the tips on the downhill sections! I can see my wife now, eyes closed, knuckles burning white as she grips onto the seat!!
