Hi I was really considering relocationg to Arizona but.... (Phoenix: house, lease)

Sorry, I am reposting this in the general Arizona section as well for additional comments from people from Flagstaff and Arizona in general.

Hi, I am in Southern New England in a State that is beautiful where I live, but the rest is really going downhill and there are no job opportunities at all. My State was actually one of the two that lost population in the last census. Anyway the area of Arizona that seemed most desirable to me was Flagstaff, it had everything I was looking for, active city, plenty of 20 something chicks to woo , full change of seasons and plenty of snow in the winter, beautiful mountains, etc. Unfortunately as I looked through the job listing, all of the opportunities seemed to be further south in Scottsdale. I really don't want to go near Phoenix, to hot, to crowded, but Scottsdale looked really nice from the pics and I was going to apply for some jobs in the area. When I mentioned this to the people in the Flagstaff forum on another site, they all turned mean and angry and told me if I ever went to "The Valley" to please stay there and don't ever ruin Flagstaff or take all of their water like all the other snobs from Scottsdale and California. I didn't understand the hostility , really if there were opportunities in Flagstaff it would definitely be my first choice.

Now after reading some threads in this forum, I hear that all of the people in Scottsdale are snobby BMW driving phonies, they sound a lot like my cousin actually. Also I read that all of the women there have enhanced.... things From the pictures Scottsdale looked incredible, but I only like girls who don't have any enhancements, smaller is way better to me actually. Is Scottsdale really that bad? The Flagstaff people were so miserable when I mentioned Scottsdale that I actually gave up on Arizona altogether for a while and was looking at Reno and Carson City. That too has its drawbacks so I am reconsidering Arizona or even working in a neighboring State and staying where I am, though honestly I would probably buy a house I saw for 1.2 million in Sedona if I won the powerball. Any opinions / comments on Arizona / Scottsdale / Flagstaff or whatever? Any normal people there? I have driven through the Southern portion of your State before and from what I remember it was incredible. In terms of the landscape alone, It is the only State I would ever consider that doesn't have the ocean. Fell free to give me guidance Arizonians.

Scottsdale is a part of "Phoenix", OK? Scottsdale shares a long border with Phoenix. It's just across the street. If you are coming to Scottsdale, you are also coming to what is called Phoenix by most. Anyway, you have discovered the problem - AZ has only a couple of population and productivity centers. There are few good jobs outside the Phoenix and Tucson area. Colorado, Utah, and parts of New Mexico also have nice landscape. Same problem with jobs in those states, too, though.

Hmm, same with my State, beautiful in the South, but the rest of the State is a write off and everyone has to work in Connecticut or Mass and commute. I view Scottsdale as a smaller city bordering Phoenix. At least Scottsdale gets snow once and a while and it looks 1000 times better then Phoenix in the pics.... still.... there has to be a way to get to Flagstaff if I really want to without having to wait until my stocks reverse merge and go from .02 to $24 or I win powerball.

Yes, technically Scottsdale is a city bordering Phoenix, just like ALL the other cities bordering Phoenix, however, really they are suburbs and pretty close to looking alike. Like Ponderosa said, you cross the street and you're in Phoenix.

Phoenix also does get snow (in very small amounts and not every year). The only part of Scottsdale that gets snow is the very most northern area- a very small area as compared to the rest of Scottsdale.

You'd have to come see it for yourself before you judge it. We all have opinions and yours may not be the same as others.

Not to dilute your issues but have you tried Prescott or Cottonwood. They are smaller than Flagstaff but offer some benefited in the jobbing arena, you are close to Phoenix. Don't get me wrong there is no windfall of job opportunities but it may be worth a look.

When I was living in Phoenix, I thought Scottsdale was pretty upscale. I guess there are snooty people everywhere. I always liked Flagstaff but outside of the university, most jobs are clerk, cashier type. My friend just moved away from Flagstaff. She had an admin job at NAU but the cost of living was just too much for her,which was too bad b/c she really liked Flagstaff. I think that area is beautiful...Flagstaff, Sedona, etc....but sometimes the beautiful places are beautiful for a reason...no jobs.

In all seriousness, this sort of thing is not an issue with the average Arizonian.

It is what you make of it. You come and look and see where you want to live. I am from Ohio.. there are plenty of people from all over the eastern part ofthe country here. I am sure there are normal people here! LOL I was when I moved here! I like to think I still am! I am one of those people who really like looking at a desert mountain horizon from any street I go down and truly love the desert. I don't even notice the other people. I do knowtheyare here though! LOL GOOD LUCK!

Lenny, I would also check out the Northwest USA. There's a lot going on in many areas, and we don't have the humidity and rough winters like the NE. I would check out the Spokane area (Coeur d'Alene, eastern WA), western Oregon, Bend, Oregon, and even western Montana. Where I live in Oregon, its treed, mountainous, and we barely get any snow. There's lots of opportunity nearby, and if you don't mind larger cities, you can get or do anything you want in Portland. Nice thing with Portland is you can be out of the cityscape in 20 minutes. Same with Salem. Hiking, boating, fishing, hunting.... if you can put up with the hippies, you'll love it here.
