I have a contractor's license in California, where most of my business is flooring. A property owner in Arizona wants me to do some flooring work on his property in Arizona. I would like to avoid the hassle of becoming a licensed contractor in Arizona if possible. If I employ subcontractors who are licensed in Arizona to do all the work, while following my instruction and supervision, will that allow me to bypass getting a license?

Best source for this is the Registrar of Contractors here in AZ, or an attorney familiar with working with those statutes. Anonymous legal advice on an internet forum is never a really great idea. You still look to me like the, or a, general contractor under those circumstances.

In Georgia, you have to be a licensed contractor in the state the work will be done in, and to get liability insurance for the job as well.

If it's a one off job, and you know the property owner, I don't think you're going to have an issue.

Unless something gets damaged or someone gets hurt, in which case, his @ss will be up sh*t creek.

I can't stand people who want to skirt the system. The rest of us pay our dues and do things legal, so should everyone.

If you know good flooring installers who are licensed, who would be your subs and "do all the work" if you tried this, just advise your potential client to hire them to do the work.

If you get in trouble for not having a license just tell them "the helpful but random strangers on City Data said it would be ok."
Works everytime.

jobs under $1k don't need a license in Az, and the going rate for flooring installs is so low, you're unlikely to top that.

this is more a case of a fool and his money than skirting the system. The last tile job I had done cost like $1.10 sq/ft - anyone who would pay a contractor to drive from California to "supervise" that kind of work just feels better if they pay too much.
