Having lived in shakeytail country most of my life, I've never had a problem with them. In fact, my way of moving slow and making noise has had them move away from me more often than not. In most cases of bites, its mostly because the folks were moving too quickly and quietly. And most of these folks were flatlander tourists.

Well, if youve been in rattler country your whole life, you could inform the "flatlander tourists" that making all the noise in the world wont do a dang thing considering snakes dont have ears!

Cool, at least you know the difference. Some people really think that if you walk around talking loudly and making a lot of noise, youll scare the snakes away. We're not dealing with bears, people!
Yes, if you stomp a lot, the snake will be made aware of your presence through vibrations which they pick up through their jaws. However, stomping wont clear the snakes out, except on few occasions. Most snakes sit verrrrry still in anticipation that you wont notice them, regardless of how much stomping you do. If they blow their cover, its "game on" for most of them, at which point you will hear the tell-tale rattle, or witness them coil up into a strike pose in pre-attack defense mode. To me, there is nothing cooler than witnessing a rattler coil up, rattle like mand and do the slow tongue-flick.

Its a neat spectacle to behold, trust me. Its probably the most enduring symbol of the wild west (right up there with the cowboys and saguaros).

We bought property in Seligman off of the historic rt 66 in the Antelope Valley Ranches Phase 2 (cattle country) of last year, we were going to build a home there, but with this economy going the way its going we decided to put a park trailer (travel trailer) there and use as a vacation home instead, we live in Stamford, CT. Do the snakes hang around where the cattle/antelope etc roam? or do they live in rock/canyon (mountains) area?

Next time i encounter a rattlesnake I will shoot him instead were I am living parttime as a vacation home you need a gun where I live it is rural out there.

Some things we learn and do expose others for not really having a clue about what they are speaking....
