Rattlesnake Deaths from 1979-1998 (20 years) = 97

VS.

Deer Mouse/Hantavirus Deaths from 1993-2008(15 years) = 140 or 182 actual deaths due to misreporting or unreported cases. They estimate 30-40% of Hantavirus deaths go unreported or misreported.

Rattlesnakes bites have a cure or anti-venom. Hantavirus has NO CURE and almost half the people who get it die.

Which is deadlier? The Deer Mouse of course.

They estimate that up to 4 out of every 10 mice caught test positive for the Hantavirus.

SDNHM - Deer Mouse

I'd rather take on the rattler than the Deer Mouse.

Wow that's crazy... Yea, I hate snakes too. I know there are snakes out there, but there are snakes everywhere. I would say be cautious.

This is a GREAT post, I gave you rep points for this one.

People always hate on snakes and persecute them to the ends of the earth. Maybe your post will open some eyes. Snakes, believe it or not, are a friend of mankind. Think of the millions of rattlers out there who, on average, eat 9 lbs of rodents per year. W/o snakes mankind would probably be in very sad shape no thanks to rampant disease spread by rodents. People just need to leave snakes alone and call Animal Control if one is in their yards, rather than hacking them to death.

THANKS!

Twice as many people die from the Deer Mouse and the Hantavirus that it can carry, compared to deaths by rattlesnakes. Snakes keep rodent populations in control.

If the Deer Mouse population gets out of control, you can have a serious viral epidemic. The Hantavirus can mutate and if and when it does, you can have thousands of people being infected by it and dying.

Death to the Deer Mouse!
Long live the rattlesnake and other snakes!

What would some people rather have, rodents in their house or the occasional snake outside? The occasional snake outside will make the odd's of rodents in your house a lot less likely, the occasional snake will not gnaw on anything causing damage, the occasional snake will not leave droppings that are likely filled with disease and filth, the occasional snake will not create an unsanitary environment whatsoever.

100% correct.

Mice destroy electrical wiring, they gnaw through numerous household items, spread deadly diseases, and infest homes.

Deer Mice carry the Hantavirus but other rodents carry other forms of deadly viruses also. SARS, which is similar to the Hanatvirus, can also be spread by rodents, along with many other deadly viruses and plagues. Rodents have killed MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of people in the past 100 years. The "Black Death" killed millions in Europe, Asia and Africa in the 1920's.

Rattle Snakes are your best friend when compared to the death, destruction and misery that rodents leave behind.

The only time I found a snake killing "justified" was when I was in Northern Arizona and a person encountered a Green Mojave Rattlesnake on their property.

The issue with this snake is that they are more deadlier than the Western Diamondback, about thirty times more toxic than that of the Diamondback. They are also very aggressive and have been reported to actually "chase down" people.

When Steve Irwin was alive, he did a TV special on deadly snakes, you never saw Steve Irwin attempting to capture the Mojave as he did with other snakes. Irwin knew that the snake is very deadly and very aggressive.

So, in the end, they killed the Mojave Rattlesnake with a 12-Gauge. It was huge. Probably 4 - 5 feet long.

A woman who lives about three miles from me died from a Green Mohave bite two years ago. She was dead within 15 minutes of the strike.
