I grocery shopped (12/29/17)in Avondale & bought brussel sprouts, avocados, gummi bears, whole raw almonds & sea scallops. Every item purchased was taxed at 2.50(tax-2) what is this tax for?

This link might explain it.

It is the city of Avondale 2.5% sales tax.

"The State of Arizona does not charge sales tax on food purchased at retail outlets for home consumption (grocery stores). However, cities are allowed to do so, and almost all of them do."

2.) If they tax Groceries or not in Arizona?
As I know; Tennessee Does Tax Groceries.
At the state and county level, groceries are not taxed. Cities can tax and that varies by the local jurisdiction.

Specifically for Gilbert, groceries are exempt. So the tax rate is 0.

This doesn't apply to all cities though, so it depends on where you buy your groceries as well as what you buy. (Don't assume everything and anything you buy inside a grocery store is tax-exempt. It depends on the item.)

And yes Gilbert is a safe city.

Here's a good reference guide: http://www.tax-rates.org/arizona/gilbert_sales_tax

Default Food tax in Arizona, Yavapai County, and Prescott, AZ

I just found a TAX 2 charge on my bill at Sprouts. EVERY item was food, no bottled water, alcohol, etc. that is considered taxable or requires a bottle deposit. I called the market. They said it's not a city tax but to their knowledge our state and/or county charge tax on food items, therefore a TAX 1 or TAX 2 will be added to grocery bills. Much (mis)information on the web about food tax rates by state, county, city.

I recall a case in California, where a bakery avoided taxes by calling truffles "mousse balls.".

Default Sales Taxes in Prescott, AZ

Prescott charges 2.75% sales tax on food/groceries. It's a city tax. (TAX 1 on receipts)

They charge the following on non-food items (TAX 2 on receipts):

State 5.6%
County .75%
City 2.75%

Total 9.10%

I figured this out from a receipt I received when buying food and non-food items at a local store.
