Default New winter home in Mohave County AZ

I'm moving to my new winter home tomorrow! Mohave Valley is south of Bullhead City and north of Lake Havasu City. Closer to BHC and close to the river. I think it would be considered climate zone 10. Does anyone have any idea what types of plants, vines, trees, shrubs and cacti do well in that area? Is anyone here familar with the Willow Valley subdivision? That's the location.

agave, sage, ocotillo (if there's good lime content in the soil)

go with other local, native plants & you can't go wrong

vegetable gardens do fine if you're sure you can water a lot.

Aloe Vera, Desert Willow, Fruitless Mulberry, Eucalyptus(SP)

I lived in the Willow Valley area........NICE! A bit cooler than Bullhead, but they spray the crops often, and this can be a problem if you have allergies.

Thanks for your post, I never thought of Aloe Vera. What a great plant to have growing right outside your door! I've noticed Eucalyptus don't do well in microbursts. I saw quite a few of them uprooted from the last bad storm.

Oleander does REALLY well, especially once the roots hit the water table........which doesnt take long in Willow Valley. Its also a good deterrent for coyotes. Just be careful if you have pets.....its toxic if ingested, and can cause skin irritation.

Fall is the best time to plant....your plants get the root system established before the long hot summer hits.

If you purchase your plants at WalMart, they come with a guarantee......If your plant dies, just return it with the receipt, and they replace it.

If you live close to the river, there is LOTS of wildlife........(coyotes, beaver, havalina, and worst of all, SKUNKS! Be sure that all crawlspaces are sealed, and dont leave pet food outside. Those pesky critters can squeeze thru the smallest of spaces, even around pipes......and will come right in the house!

I spotted a skunk in broad daylight, just walking down the middle of the street. I've heard coyotes in the distance. Going to have to pass on the oleander, I have small dogs.

Off topic: Do you know of any other stores coming to the new shopping center besides Target and Kohles?

Yikes! Skunks in broad daylight signals rabies! Same goes for raccoons. Any nocturnal animal seen during the day should be avoided!

SKUNK: are you sure that you are not referring to the two legged variety that tends to infest the River area?

I lived in BHC for over a year.

agirlsworld is on a distinguished road
hi folks, interesting thread. I am moving to this area this weekend. Gonna stay with my son and his fiance until i find a place either Mohave Valley, Ft Mohave or BHC, for me my daughter and my grandson. (and no i am not old LOL since most folks going there seem to be retired....my daughter just made me a grandma at an early age! LOL)

I am in Mesa, AZ right now, i have been reading throw tons of threads regarding BHC and the surrounding areas, and lets just say meth and drugs are everywhere, probably worse here in the morman ville of Mesa than BHC.

I would like to ask ARizonaBear about rentals, work and other things. I have interviews lined up at the casinos. and small companies in BHC. My background is Aerospace. and what really sux is i know i will not make nearly what I am making now. BUT totally prepared to take a drastic cut in pay, to have my sanity back and start my life again.

I am also thinking about LHC area, as there seems to be more outlets there (ie:shopping and companies for jobs). Can you tell me if ther is any type of aerospace/aviation type work at say the airport? I might even consider opening shop at the airport (airplane parts and supplies for bigger regional jets vs, the general aviation stuff).

Anyhow, would just like some more insight. My son has given me alot to digest, but leaving this weekend to go up there and scared to death.
