I hear often about the wind in Kingman and how unpleasant it can be. Not to sound totally ignorant but can someone explain to me why the wind can be so intolerable?

Wind is an annoyance, like a fly buzzing around that keeps landing on you. It's a personal thing I suppose, but I detest wind (and grey skies too) unless it is associated with some weather event like an imminent storm. Anyway, Kingman is not all THAT windy. Chino Valley or Winslow gets my vote for most irritating wind.

Wind what wind?
6 months year it comes from the SW the other 6 months out of the north.
Really it is not bothersome at all at least to me. I work outside during the day and during the summer its a much required relief to keep the air moving.
So I would not hold wind as a reason to not come to town.

Great thread. I appreciate reading all the insights and perspectives. I'm in San Diego, a block from the ocean. Been in San Diego 26 years, on the beach for 13, and in California my whole life. I've been interested in Arizona since I rode out there in 2003, and been riding out there ever since. So many nice parts. I like the smaller old saloon towns, like Wickenburg and Tombstone, but I can't remember a spot I didn't like except the large metro areas. What about Flagstaff? I'm very caught in the middle. I pay cheap rent currently and I have a good job. If something were to change with my rental, I would be more easily pushed over the fence to move. I would have to find a good job in Nevada or Arizona. Some of the housing looks incredible for $250,000 in both states. I would move because of the congestion here, the noise, the cost of housing if I had to move out of where I'm at. I would face other challenges if I moved though. The grass isn't always greener on the other side of the septic tank. Trade current problems for new problems. I guess I'd have to wait for something to change where I'm at, and then get the hell outta here.

With all respect, are you out of your mind? It sounds like you have the dream life there in SD. There are few good jobs in Arizona outside of Phoenix and you would have to be nuts to trade a place a block from the beach for a life in Phoenix.

I could be completely nuts. Maybe I just need a long vacation, but I've been dreaming of moving to Arizona for 3 years. Like I said, my fantasy is to be in my own home without roommates, with some land, and some more seasonal weather. I'll never own a home here.

You may want to pay some attention to the current housing market. Prices are coming down and may continue to slip both in San Diego and many parts of Arizona. This may be your opportunity to buy.

Well, looks like the wife is losing interest in the move to Kingman. What's a guy to do?

Stay in S.D. But if you reconsider, Northern Arizona has much to offer. We settled on Kingman because of it's proximity to SoCal and mild winter climate.
The issue of the wind here is relative, since the high desert area of California, which was our home before, was more windy, and blew down our mature trees and cement tiles from the roof. We are probably used to it more than others. If you spend a few weeks out here you'll know whether or not it will be a smart move.

I'm asking the same question, WHY!?!?

Why in the world would you make such a move?
living in San Diego is becoming more dificult by the day. The roads are horrendous ( Potholes everywhere) The local Govt is inept at best taxes are high home prices are higher. Huge traffic problems, high crime rate. I live in Point Loma area of San Diego, every night 3 to 4 cars are stolen in the area. The city is bankrupt, Very few Police Officers for a city this size. At night we have one unit for Point Loma, Ocean Beach and the airport area, slow response times are normal. Ive lived here all my life, but will soon be moving as soon as i sell my overpriced 3 Bedroom 1 bath home, Its on the market for 589,000. But the weather is nice.
