Coming from the east coast I'll say you'll like Scottsdale if you can get something near McCormick Ranch that will be nice - lots of fun activities, lots of active retirees too, and beautiful lakes, and bike/walk paths.

My partner and I are also about the same age and are moving this week from the VA/DC metro area to Sun City. We love all of the rec centers and activities it has to offer while not being as far out as some of the other 55+ options. It might be worth a look, especially if you are open to the idea of getting two places instead of one. We also considered Tuscon but the kind of places that we were drawn to (larger house and yard) would require more maintenance which is something we wanted to get away from. In any event, best of luck with your possible relocation.

My family and I moved out to Chandler from NY back in 2008 and we love it out here. We love having the ability to enjoy the outdoors all year round. (You can still bike/jog in the mornings and evenings in the summertime). We do a lot of hiking and there are some really nice lakes (Lake Pleasant in the West Valley and Canyon/Saguaro Lake out east).

In addition to the towns that your exploring you might want to look into Mesa in the East Valley and Peoria and Anthem in the West. In regards to builders you might want to look into Pulte and Shea.

You mentioned the "sports scene". If that means team sports then you want the Phoenix area over Tucson. Phoenix has MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA teams, as well as ASU and Grand Canyon University. Tucson has only the University of Arizona.

We're retired and in our 60s but have no interest in 55+ communities so can't help you there. Central Phoenix might meet your political needs,.

Thanks everyone for all the input on areas, communities, builders and the sports scene. Very much appreciated!

Ooh, you should consider Victory at Verrado - far west side in Buckeye. Retired active community. Brand new and home prices I think are in your price range: Victory at Verrado - Verrado.
