(Also the same reason no one bought those flaming orange Suns plates.)

Here's an idea...offer no specialty plates...offer one relatively basic design, but make it color-customizable as an additional vanity plate charge. I guess to make it more managable you could limit the lettering to either black or white and pick a certain number of colors/shades available.

Currently my household has a couple standard plates and one AZ Historic Vehicle plate. Those are still my favorite and I'm enough of a license plate dork that I was counting down for years until I finally could get it for the vehicle on which it resides. Love that copper plate -- truly unique among all 50 states' thousands of offerings, I believe.
Those copper old car plates are HEAVY, the newer printed ones feel like paper which I don't like.

I still have the plate off of my '86 Honda Accord. If it were legal I'd put it on the car I have now!

Interesting that you didn't transfer it to another vehicle. Arizona plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle.

Maybe because I bought the new car before I sold the old one? I really don't remember it's been so long.

Arizona should go back to embossed plates (raised letters). Nevada recently went back to raised letters because they don't last. I would go for something like the Centennial plate with raised letters. That way there's no back and forth about the plate not depicting the landscape of part of the state. Just replace the bottom of the Centennial plate with "Grand Canyon State" and be done. The plates we have now chip and crack and look horrible. Some people probably get specialty plates just to avoid having such a cheap looking plate on their car. Also, give people the option to personalize the ugly brown plates just like you can personalize vintage plates in CA and NV.

I love the current plates. So creative. I really enjoy the design. I'm surprised so much plate-hate, I thought people would like them over something so plain? I also really like the 'environmental' design but I can't bring myself to pay extra for it.

Sorry to bump an old thread, however, I have noticed that ADOT is running out of plates in the Bxxyyyy series (where x is a letter and y is a digit). I would think it would be a good idea to introduce a new design when ADOT gets to the Cxxyyyy series.
