Default Phoenix Student -- wanting colder weather

Hello, I am from Mesa area who is going to college at the moment. After getting my transfers degree next year I would love to move somewhere colder. Seattle, or NYC.

All though I do not want to pay the crazy out-of-state tuition. Which is way out there.

My question is Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. Does Flagstaff get a substantial amount of snow during the Winter? I LOVE the cold, I love snow, and it may be small town because I tend to be a city type of guy. And Phoenix is a cultural wasteland as it is. Lol

Is Flagstaff a cold place in general during winter?

I think Washington is in the WICHE group where you can attend and pay 150% of in-state tuition (if you are a resident of a member state). Alaska is a member, too. That should be cold enough for you. Maybe you can qualify. Check it out: WICHE/WUE.

Thank you for this, I will look into. What do you mean paying 150% Tuition? Does that mean it is TRIPLE the cost of regular tuition.

Lol Alaska is cold, but I want somewhere cultural, a city with character vibe. Somewhere with lots of rain. Lol and Seattle is that place.

150% what does represent?

rep points for the link.

Yes, its very cold in Flagstaff in winter. I read it somewhere that Flagstaff has more days below freezing (in the lower 48) than any other city. I doubt that claim, but yes, its cold. Days are decently mild, nights are frigid.

I hope you're not a math major . It means that if the resident tuition at the school is say $1000, then the tuition for a student in the program is $ 1500.

NO I am not a math major Lol, I am going to a Business Major. I figured that is what it was talking about. Its just I was confused because of the 3:1 tuition ratio that applies to most out-of-state students that is why 150% is cheaper, all though pricey. All though at least its not TRIPLE cost!!

This is good, I will have to consider this thank you

WOW, I've been to Flagstaff before, knowing that Phoenix is the hottest large metropolitan area in U.S I think. (How many cities get 120 heat 3-4 months straight out?)

It is strange that Flagstaff is cold, I wonder why that is!! Geographically Flagstaff is not far north.

That would make Seattle milder then Flagstaff though. Strange.

If you want to move somewhere with cooler weather, I would definitely recommend Flagstaff and NAU. NAU is a great campus! I've walked around it several times-- it's not stunning, but it's fairly attractive, and most students up there seem to be very happy. Flagstaff is my favorite town in all of Arizona. Beautiful setting, tons of pine trees, great downtown, close to all the goodies northern Arizona has to offer. A lot of railroad noise, but then again, Flagstaff is a railroad town. The only drawback to NAU is that nobody outside of Arizona (and many within) has ever heard of it-- but that doesn't mean it's not a good school. Flagstaff definitely gets snow-- once I was stuck there in a snowstorm on I-40, in the city limits, but totally stuck nonetheless for about 8 hours. Flagstaff is probably not the greatest town to settle down in career wise, but for college it's great!

Growing up in Chicago I miss the good cold days. I am naturally a Polar Bear. I love rain, snow, clouds, HATE the sun. I will not miss it at all. HAHA

But I still am an outdorsy type of person that loves culture.

So I was thinking starting with Flagstaff, then Seattle. afterwards. NYC during my late 20's . or so.

But Seattle, it is not TOO expensive, like southern cali is it?

Flagstaff is just as sunny as Phoenix is, just much colder, and whenever it rains in the winter months in Phoenix it snows up there. If you hate the sun maybe you should go to the Pacific Northwest.

That's possible, but it needs an asterisk. I have property near there and it is not unusual with the elevation and dry air to have 50-60 degree temperature swings from day to night. In can be 30 in the wee hours and 80 in the afternoon. The temp increase at sunrise is amazing - maybe 20 degrees in the first couple hours. So the big overnight drops add to the count of days below freezing. But if you did temps on an average daily basis, Flagstaff would not even come close to some of the colder areas along the northern tier.
