Looking for info about Willocx. I know its where Rex Allen was from.
My interest is in its potential as a place to retire. I've driven thru the area a few times, but have not spent much time there. I understand the summers are a bit milder than Tucson, due to the elevation. But I guess winters are naturally a bit cooler. Now, retirement isn't in my immediate future-but about 8 years ahead. Starting the investigation now-making a list of communities throughout the south and southwest and then paring it down based on the negative info I recieve. Thanks in advance for your help. |

Hi...I've also been looking for info on Wilcox also without much luck.
You've likely already Googled and found this site but here it is again, the Wilcox newspaper: wilcoxrangenews.com and try the pages /home and /classified. I've always found the classifieds are a reasonable cross section of a place i.e. the cost and types of housing, the kinds of jobs offerred, the types of events that merit news coverage, etc. Sometimes the police weekly summarys are informative too about the kinds and numbers of crimes investigated. I can't recall where that was but maybe an article in the same newspaper. As I recall it was mostly property theft and drunk charges. Look on Google too for items relating to Wilcox's Chochise county. If you need a discount store nearby try finding your favorite using "location of the nearest" using the Wilcox zip code 85644. That told me the closest Walmart is in Benson some 35 miles away. For me a 70 mile round trip at 10 miles/gal @ $3/gal is a bit pricey to buy under a $100 worth of stuff. Good luck. |

We have some friends who live in Willcox. They claim it has great weather nearly all year around, homes are on large spreads, people are extremely friendly and for retirees it's very laid back and almost like heaven.

From what I have heard, Nitram . . . I agree except not much excitement or interesting stuff to do.

And I bet that's why so many retirees live there.

I lived in Willcox for a short time in the 1980's and strangley, my back door neighbor in Oklahoma grew up there.
It reminds me a bit of a small west Texas town in many ways except for the beautiful mountain valley it sits in. Weather wise it does get a bit nippy in the winter and it is definately colder than Tucson in winter but for the most part it gets to 55 or 60 degrees most days. Pretty cold at night though. Summers are distinctly milder than Tucson especially at night. You will notice that there are not any palm trees to speak of in Willcox like there are in Tucson. Willcox is at 4100 feet while Tucson is at 2600 feet. There really isn't anything to do there except explore the mountains. It is kind of dumpy in the town itself but people are great there. It is about 30-40 minutes to Benson or Safford. About 60-80 minutes to Tucson depending what part you want to get to. I was too young to settle down there at the time I lived there but it would suit me just fine nowadays. |

Thanks to all who responded. I really appreciate the info. Seems like its worth looking into.
I plan to visit there later this year as a side trip from Tucson. |
