I too live in Western Colorado. I have lived in Show Low, AZ. I would give anything to go back. You should definately check that or Pinetop out.

Why don't you try Bisbee, AZ? It's way in the Southern part of the state, is in the mountains, and is cooler than the desert. Some of the other places mentioned are nice, in the mountains, but are a bit dead.

The Payson/Pine area under the "Rim" and 90 miles North of Phoenix area is an ideal place to live. Some of the cleanest air in the U.S. Payson is about 14,000 pop. while Pine(13 miles north) is about 2,500 pop.The village of Pine is like going back in time 60 years, and is magic for the soul.

It is, as long as your eyes are Wide Shut. Ignore the trailer trash, the low life city people who move to the mountains and pretend they're suddenly "country". If you like METH, alcoholics, and worn out bar floozies, it's almost perfect!

Don't ever hire a local to do any work on your house. IF they show up, they take three hour lunches, or they sit around scratching their meth sores, on your time, naturally.

It could be a great place for the weekend, if you bring your own teeth.

What is a small town? I consider Prescott small, but some people think it is a metropolis.

Peoria? The Peoria I know is a bustling part of the NW Phoenix metro area with a population of over 150,000. Certainly not something that would fit under the general category of "small mountain town"!

I see a few messages in this thread suggesting Jerome. Jerome is a great place to visit but I wouldn't recommend living there. While the quote pasted above describes another area of Arizona, it could describe Jerome. If I were to apply the description to Jerome, I would describe it as this: "If you like POT, alcoholics, worn out bar floozies, gossip, aggressive behavior, and the morally bankrupt, it's almost perfect." The town has its own subculture, one that embraces misfits and the mentally ill. The pressure to conform to local "values" including gossip, bullying, drug-alcohol use, and promiscuity can be unbearable for those who aren't interested in adopting that lifestyle as their own. In Jerome, you aren't "culturally enlightened" if you don't smoke pot, exploit others, gossip, are educated, have life-goals, or refuse to pass the local women around. In Jerome there's a saying: you haven't lost your girlfriend/boyfriend -- you've just lost your turn.
-- Glad to have gotten out.

Default Jerome, I'll second that

We live about 45 minutes from Jerome, it's a wonderful little town. If I had to pick a downside it would be the drive through the mountains to get there. It's a beautiful drive but makes for such slow going. We're 19 miles away and as I said it's a 45 minutes drive.
