alternatives to Sierra Vista?
My husband and I must relocate to the Sierra Vista area within the next couple of months(army orders).
However, after doing my research, and learning of the leukemia cluster in SV, I no longer want to live there. We have a young son, and knowing what I know now about the area, I'd never forgive myself if he were to develop health problems.
Can anyone suggest an alternative town/city to live in that is not too long of a commute?

There's a few small tonws in the area, nothing big, though.
It really depends on how far you or your husband want to commute.
You may be able to rent or buy something out of town. Bisbee and Tombstone are both close by, but close enough to commute? Not sure. I would be fine with it, but I'm not most people. It's about a 1/2 hour drive to either, if I remember correctly.

Benson is about 40 minutes from Sierra Vista. Not sure there is much to rent there though (if that's what you are looking to do?). If you were looking to looking to buy there was some new construction going at Whetstone - which would be about a 30 straight shot down highway 90 to Sierra Vista.
The fact is, however, that between these various towns it's mostly wide-open spaces so away from Sierra Vista means - well "Away from Sierra Vista" so there will likely be a bit of a commute. The good news is there I can't imagine traffic EVER being an issue.

Perhaps Green Valley or Rio Rico... Nogales (AZ) is closer, but you probably wouldn't wanna live there. Don't know if there are rentals available in Rio Rico.
On second thought, Vail may not be too bad. You get on I-10 and then down to Sierra Vista. At least on weekends you can use the amenities of Tucson.

I lived in Tombstone for a while and commuted to Sierra Vista...it wasn't bad...very tolerable. I actually enjoyed living in Tombstone...lots of history...always people around in costume/period clothing, small town feel but with lots of new faces (tourists) to meet each day. I live in Tucson now and would much rather be back in Tombstone! If that isn't your cup of tea, St. David area seems nice and that commute isn't bad either (I commuted from Tucson to Sierra Vista for several months until the end of the school year and went through there each day...people are right...you may have to travel more miles, but the traffic is never an issue!) Not sure how far of a radius the cluster includes, but Hereford is a nice area fairly close to Sierra Vista...good schools, too...especially Valley View Elementary! Good luck to you!

I moved from a small old mining town in upstate New York...so small we didn't have a stop light or a movie theater and had to drive 10 miles for a grocery store...30 miles for a half way decent one! Tombstone was a great place coming from that...small old town feel with a lot going on and lots of new people to meet every day...I miss it! It really was a fun place to live!

Bisbee is my favorite town in Arizona, by far. It's incredibly unique, built on the side of a mountain, and restored over the years, post-mining economy. The one problem is that it's typical of a 'second home' community syndrome, where wealthy people jack up the prices of homes, with no accompanying economy to justify the costs of the homes.

Tombstone is 17 miles from Sierra Vista by Charleston road. Easy commute, laid back small town. Tombstone realty had a reader board up stating they had rentals.

Check out Sonoita, Elgin and Patagonia areas. Haven't heard of any health issues in those areas.
