AZ law is strict against carrying in school zones and restaurants that serve alcohol. That is a given. As has been noted, you can not carry in places that prohibit it (private property)

You may carry open or 'partially concealed' without a permit. I say 'partially concealed' which is a misnomer, but as long as the gun itself or a portion of the holster is recognizable, you are not technically carrying 'concealed.'

Now to the vehicle laws. You are allowed a gun anywhere in the passenger compartment as long as it is in a holster. Glove box, map pocket, dashboard, under the seat, etc. etc. as long as it's in a holster.

The minute you take the gun out of a holster, it can only be in the glove box, map pocket, or open view, or you are carrying a concealed weapon and committing misconduct with a weapon. It's a class I misdemeanor.

The poster who suggested that a cop will 'warn' you if you don't have any previous offenses is not right. I'll never give a legit citizen a hard time for carrying concealed, but we have no way of telling if you've been given a 'warning' before.

An officer 'may' arrest you anytime you commit misconduct with a weapon.

I somehow MISSED this reply earlier. Time for new glasses!

This may be a silly question but: Does a "pocket holster" count?

And what exactly is the proper protocol if one is pulled over and has a gun in a holster, either On them , or hidden, or in open view?

As for traffic stops, IIRC, AZ does not require you to inform the officer that you're carrying. But in my experience, it's always a good idea to do so. Don't blurt out "I have a gun." Rather, just hand over your CCW with your driver's license. I've been pulled over about six time while carrying. Only once did the officer even look at my permit, none ever asked to see my sidearm.

OMG! You made me laugh SO hard! I guess I should also refrain fro using the words "Well, Hiya copper!" when in such situations?

(I'm sorry, I just found that cute. Plus, you made me go look up IIRC! Interactive Illinois Report Card? Nooo. If I Really Cared? Gee, that's rude!! Immunity and Infection Research Centre? Hmm, no... OH! If I Recall/Remember Correctly! Ohhhh. LOL! Some of us are a bit computer-challenged!)

I know somebody who goes to school in Phoenix. He said you only need a permit for concealed carry. Open carry requires nothing. Arizona's gun laws are pretty liberal. I remember him saying he could walk down his street with his AK with a 75 round drum in it in broad daylight and would have no problems. I wish other places were like that, lol.

That's an exaggeration. You can be assured, if you walk down the street with an AK-47 with a 75-round drum, somebody is going to call the police on you.

You can walk down the street with a handgun on your belt in most areas, and nobody will bother you, but not an AK-47.

I've never been there, so I can't comment on it. Perhaps people don't care in the area he lives? It's a possibility. Or just an exaggeration like you said.

I also suggest you not use the line, "What's the problem?" If you do, expect a sarcastic smile and a response along the lines of, "I'll write it down for you." Service with a smile. (If you're stopped by a "seasoned" officer; If it's an FNG, you'll probably get the same robotic response no matter what you say)

If you have a firearm in the vehicle with you, keep your hands on the steering wheel and tell the officer up front. Any officer who expects to survive his twenty will assume you're armed until proven otherwise, but it's good to let him know.

So, purposely slurring your words in an attempt to be "funny" would also be a no-no? J.K!

Hey, I was talking about YOU on another thread on the Phoenix board. Something about needing help from a AZPO.

But you still did not tell me if a pocket holster is okay for carrying/stowing inside auto.

I was going to ask you about Sheriff Joe, but I think I better go put that on the Phoenix section.

So, uh, what ARE good lines to get out of a ticket?

FNG? FNG? Florida National Guard? FNG...oh...is that some kind of "new guy?"

yes a pocket holster's fine - as long as it's in the car and not in your pocket completely out-of-sight. You still need a CCW for that.
