Very good detail. Sharp, too (..and I don't just mean the cactus thorns). Love the desert colors.

My Dad left his family and ended up as an Arizona working cowboy and started out with the Arizona Land and Cattle Company near Tolleson in the mid 1930s. I found him in the 1970s and started visiting him. These photos bring back lots of great memories. Thanks to all who have contributed to this Thread.

Great picture....but I have had to many close contacts with those types of cactus to feel too much affection for them...

LOL. Me too. But I'm fascinated by them! It's amazing how many different colors & forms you can find.

kdog,
Do you have any HDR photo's to post? I'd be curious to see your take on that.

I'm about to take the plunge into digital photography (while not completely abandoning film). The Pentax K-x is the camera I'm looking at because 1) the 12.4 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor seems much more than adequate 2) I already have a Pentax k-mount lens and 3) the built-in HDR mode (takes either three or five pictures and merges them within the camera). I find a lot of HDR images are either over done (overly bracketed) or done wrong (used in non-high contrast situations...the images tend to look too "grey"). The K-x HDR seems to be on the "light" side (so it doesn't look fake or cartoonish) and, since it is "in-camera", I won't have to do it with computer software. So that's why I'm considering that camera.

Just curious your take on it.

Yeah, I've done tons of HDRs in the past. Probably most of the shots I've posted on City Data have been HDRs of one sort or another. I never bother to mention it, it's just a tool. It can be used or abused, like anything else.

Not too sure about in-camera HDRs, but then again, I shoot RAW and do everything in software anyway. I like having the control, rather than giving it to the camera. But... if you know how to control your camera, you can still get good results. Whatever works.

I've lost track of what I've posted in this thread, so at the risk of repeats, I'll just post a couple.
